Recipe
The Ward Eight, a classic cocktail born in Boston in 1898, was created to celebrate the election of Martin M. Lomasney, a local politician. This rye whiskey-based drink, featuring lemon and orange juices and grenadine, is a twist on the Whiskey Sour. While there are variations in its preparation, the original recipe is said to have originated at the Locke-Ober Café in Boston's eighth ward.
Ingredients
- 2 oz. rye whiskey
- 5 oz. lemon juice, freshly squeezed
- 5 oz. orange juice, freshly squeezed
- 2 teaspoons grenadine
- Garnish: 2 or 3 speared cherries
Directions:
- Add the rye whiskey, lemon and orange juices and grenadine to a shaker with ice.
- Shake until well-chilled.
- Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
- Garnish with speared cherries.
