Most HR professionals were never trained in systems thinking or process design. They know compensation, employee relations, and engagement, but not the principles that govern how end-to-end systems actually function. Jackson argues that this skill gap is now one of the most critical threats to HR’s credibility in the age of AI.

Throughout the conversation, he outlines a practical approach for CHROs to take back control:

• Audit every workstream where AI is already making decisions.
• Examine whether the system prioritizes experience or learning agility, activities or outcomes, conformity or curiosity.
• Build or borrow systems thinkers from operations until the HR function can design and evaluate its own logic.
• Reclaim accountability from vendors. When AI makes the wrong call, the CEO will not call the software provider. They will call the CHRO.
