Historical Crime Fiction Thriller for Mature Audience Only, Set in 1920s

This historical fiction is a story of suspense and intrigue involving organized crime and romance wrapped up in a mystery.
The language used is that typically expected from characters portrayed in this novel. In other words, the f-bomb is no stranger in this work.
One point that intrigued me was a point made early in this story regarding the origins of the Mafia during the 1600s.
I don't often read books of the time period covered by this story, but, knowing it is a mystery and the beginning of a series, I felt it worthwhile to take a chance.
I found this to be an interesting, gritty, crime fiction story with romantic scenes a tad more risqué than I expected. The below expert gives a good feel for the general flow and style of this writer.
EXCERPT:
âYou wonât be losing anything with us. Youâll be getting the same percentage as you are now. The only thing, we feel we can get the gross up. In the end, youâll be making more money.â
Solinger stared at them for a long moment. He had no choice, if he didnât come up with the money soon, he was going to lose this picture and everything he had invested in it. To hell with it. Let them distribute this picture. If he could get out of the contracts he was in now... he could do it again with these people. He had to have the money, there was no way out.
"All right,â he agreed. âYou can distribute my pictures.â
"And we donât wait for the next picture for you to use my sister,â Vinnie said. âYou use her in this one.
"In this picture? No way. This is a war picture, thereâs no place in it for women. Besides, itâs almost finished.â
"Find a place,â Vinnie said.
"Nurse, grieving wife, sister, find a place. You can go back and put it in.â
"All right,â Solinger agreed. âNormally, I donât like my backers telling me who I can use or what the picture is about. But, in this case, Iâll make an exception.â
Vinnie smiled. âI thought you would listen to reason,â he said.
There was that expression again. It was so perfectly innocent, but it gave Solinger a cold chill.
"So, how do I get the money? You write me out a check or what?â Solinger asked.
"Youâll need my sister in California, wonât you?â Vinnie asked.
"Yeah, sure.â
"When she comes, someone will come with her.
