Where did the name 'India' originate from?
Description
In this segment, host Sowjanya tells the story of how the Indian subcontinent got its name, through different eras in history.
The name "India" finds its origins in the ancient Sanskrit word "Sindhu," referring to the mighty river Indus, which flowed through the region. Over time, the Persians adapted this term as "Hindu," using it to describe the land beyond the river. The Greeks, through their contacts with the Persians, transformed this to "Indos" and "Indika," which later evolved into "India" in English. Historically, the name encapsulates the rich heritage and diverse cultures that thrived along the Indus River, encompassing a vast expanse of land, traditions, languages, and civilizations. Today, "India" symbolizes a nation imbued with a mosaic of history, cultures, and identities.
