Ladies and gentlemen, it is an honor to launch the newest season of authentically with a very special distinguished guest: Curtis Perry! From growing up fatherless with his dad in prison to growing up in an environment surrounded by drugs and where his influences were the streets to slowly becoming visually impaired, one may think all was lost...but, oh, could this be further from the truth with Curtis. As a matter of fact, it's quite the contrary, Curtis embodies what it means to trust God and thrive despite the circumstances surrounding him. You know the classic beautiful hymn... I once was lost but now am found, was blind but now I see ...in Amazing Grace...and it's these very chords that strike different when you hear Curtis story and how he's been able to literally overcome all odds and thrive despite what he's faced. My queen and I always love hanging out with Curtis and his beloved wife, Mary, for it's their wisdom, their insight, their encouragement, their fortitude through their lives that is not only inspiring, it should be an example for us all of having a positive perspective, speaking life over people through not only what we say but how we live, and ultimately loving one another and lifting up JESUS through it all. Not only is Curtis a great friend, he’s a brother in Christ and has an incredible story. I hope you are encouraged, inspired, motivated, and feel empowered to chase your dreams no matter what you’ve been through after listening to Curtis.

Grammy Award-winning artist. Believer. Husband. Father. Record label owner. New York Times Best-Selling Author. Champion & Activist. My favorite rapper. "A kid raised in Hip Hop culture who came to know Jesus." Ladies & gentlemen, without further ado, I get the honor of sharing this talk with Lecrae to you! I was honored to be one of the top listeners of none other than my favorite artist Lecrae on all of Spotify and was invited to a live listening party. During the session, I was given the opportunity to chop it up with the man, the myth, the legend--Lecrae Moore. Follow @Lecrae (all rights in pictures and music goes to Lecrae and Reach Records).
Wow. You'll just have to listen to what Ikki Soma has to say. It's powerful. It's fun. It's wise. It's all of the above and so much more. It was a straight honor to talk to Ikki. As a professional sports chaplain who was formerly the NBA's Houston Rockets chaplain, he takes you inside the locker room to see what it's like working with NBA athletes in today's day and age, ministering to pro athletes. We also talk about so much more--from marriage to family to what he's learned from working with Tony Evans (Ikki is the lead pastor of Cottage Grove Church and used to work directly with Tony in Texas) to what it's like for us as Asian-American men in a sports industry where you don't see much of us. Shout out to it also being Asian American Pacific Islander heritage month. It wasn't planned to release this episode to kick off AAPI month but I'm so glad it fell on this date. We respect and honor our families who have gone before us, paving the way for us as we celebrate those of AAPI decent. I'm passionate about being Filipino. He is passionate about being Japanese. This conversation was one of my favorites and without further ado, I excitedly invite you to buckle up, sit back, and ... enjoy. Follow Ikki: @IkkiSoma
What in the world! Amber & I stumbled upon Stubbs BBQ one Sunday during SXSW to a Lecrae concert, followed by an incredible panel with Lecrae, Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger, former Facebook exec & current YouVersion Bible app exec Nona Jones, Immersed founder Renji Bijoy, and Sailpoint Technologies Mark McClain talking Faith in the Workplace. The panel was all a part of an incredible Sunday Service at SXSW event presented by the Luis Palau Association & sponsored by He Gets Us (you know, those incredible Super Bowl commercials, DCX-building connections in the Austin community, and the Living Water Foundation. This day was honestly one of the best experiences we've had in Austin thus far. Free BBQ, faith, and my favorite artist w/ my favorite woman while he performed the song we walked down the aisle to (All I Need is You)?! Let's gooo! Chet Garner hosted the event and Andrew Palau shared the Gospel. Incredible. I started to film the panel and the journalist in me couldn't stop. I had to keep filming. And when my phone died, shout out to Mrs Amber J, I recorded on her phone for the last few seconds. I couldn't hold on to this for myself, I had to share it with you, friends. So, please, enjoy this super important & relevant discussion. I hope you learn something and are encouraged by it! Ladies and gentlemen, it’s back like it never left. Let me take a minute to reintroduce this season on authentically, starting up with none other than Detroit Pistons chaplain Jonathan Wynne. Get an inside look at what it’s like to be an NBA chaplain, walking alongside players, coaches, staff, and arena workers as we talk his journey from Alabama and a family of Civil Rights leaders to Detroit, the Pistons’ young core, celebrating black history, what real church leadership should look like, loving people of all backgrounds, ethnicities, and beliefs. So, as he puts it so eloquently, “Leave your judging spirit at the door” and sit back, relax, and enjoy.
Ladies & gentlemen, grab your popcorn, take a seat, sit back, relax, and enjoy...we’re going to the movies. Without further ado… it’s American Underdog (the major motion picture on the life of Super Bowl MVP Kurt Warner) filmmaker Andy Erwin (@erwinbros). With his brother, Jon, they produce hits. Seriously. Their feature films have all been in the Top 10 on Box Office opening weekend. Their films include I Can Only Imagine (the incredible story of MercyMe’s lead singer, Bart Millard), Woodlawn, October Baby, and much more. He got his start working in sports with ESPN then shot commercials with artists like Switchfoot, Michael W Smith, and Amy Grant…he’s got 11 GMA Dove award nominations and 3 Music Video of the Year awards to his name. & in true authentically fashion, we keep it real… From talking the importance of taking care of your mental health, especially as men, to how he fell in love with storytelling at an early age working at a local news station for $10 a day to working at ESPN’s NFL Primetime covering a Super Bowl Kurt Warner played in to making a film about him 20 years later, to the backstory & process behind making quality Christian movies in mainstream media that become #1 Box Office Hits, to who he’d have play him and his brother if there was a feature film about them, to his dream vacation spot (hint: it involves The Lord of the Rings) to telling stories with authenticity: “Point people to the Ultimate Truth…I can’t take an audience emotionally on an experience that I haven’t been willing to go on myself yet” to the moment Kurt Warner realized what he was truly fighting for in his NFL career dreams to the next film The Erwin Brothers are working on - a Navy Seal who used to be a drug addict then turned to the Lord, based on the book “Fearless” - & much more…it was truly an honor to chop it up with Andy. Erwin Bros’ website: https://www.kingdomstorycompany.com/ Make sure to follow everything Andy, his brother, and team are doing, making epic major motion pictures in mainstream media all pointing people to the True Light, Who we all need, especially in today’s day and age: Jesus.
This episode comes to you recorded in Portugal. I’m half-Filipino. I’m half-White. Mrs Amber J is my Filipina queen. Together, two worlds collide. Though we both have Filipino in our blood, we both have completely different experiences growing up in Detroit & LA. My dad came to Detroit from The Philippines when he was 8, Amber’s mother came to LA when she was an adult. Naturally, LA is more diverse than the Midwest, so our conception of being Asian in America and all that comes along with that (cough cough - we’re not Chinese, Japanese, Thai - we have so much respect for these cultures it’s just most people never guess Filipino - they’re only conception of Asia is associated with China or Japan, not the dozens of other countries that make up the continent - and ask questions like “what are you”. Well, I’m glad you asked. I’m a man. A man of God. A husband. It’s interesting how just because of people’s perceptions and views, I’ve gotten stereotyped to be “Yao Ming” “Jackie Chan” “Jeremy Lin” and oh, must love math and be great at kung-fu…these among countless other forms of discrimination and how that can deep-seededly without even realizing it affect how we view ourselves, is discussed in this episode. Among a myriad of other topics associated with race, being Filipino-American, challenges we’ve encountered while on a mission trip in Europe, what we’ve learned, how we’re growing, and much more. (please excuse the fan noise in our northern Portuguese abode--it's authentic to our living situation) Side note: I’m not Chinese or Japanese . Shout out to all those who are. But people in just pure ignorance out a label on me and stereotype me because they look at me and see Asia (a continent that has 50+ countries) so they say what they know & assume what they think they know- karate , math , you know. I never did karate I don’t like math. I’m proud to be filipino 🇵🇭 I’m half Filipino half white was being and raised in the great state of Michigan and most importantly I’m a man of God. I’m a man. Not your preconceived notion of what you may perceive me to be. Think before thinking 🤔 Before saying before stereotyping before judging. #stopasianhate People can over complicate things and find excuses to judge just like the Pharisees did but hey Jesus home we serve was the most misunderstood so we got him to depend on every day. I’m just trying to be done people pleasing. It’s something I struggle with my whole life and I’ve gotten to a point that hey if you don’t understand I don’t have to explain myself that hey if do you know somebody doesn’t like me just for being me or just completely misunderstand me or tries to attack me guess what I’m covered by God Almighty and will continue to love Jesus honor my wife love my family friends and love you and forgive you and just be me. Whoever wants to rock with us in this journey great,, whoever doesn’t , we will shake the dust up off our feet and move on. Peace ✌🏾
with my experience in national & local news & sports media 📺(Fox News, ABC, CBS, NBC) reporting in major markets, covering the NBA, NFL, MLB, NHL, & traveling the world🌎 i’ve seen truly there’s two sides to every story and how we need to truly LOVE another to bring authentic impact. let's do more...listening...to one another, while enjoying life and respecting each other for we are all made in the image of God. & as a man who loves Jesus, let's rise up, men, treat women with respect, and live with responsibility, passion & integrity 👊 in a world full of facades, people posting highlight reels of life, media showcasing many times just one side of the story - i'm here to keep it real, being authentic, as we all are in this thing called life together...learning, growing, and staying the course.

It was a true honor to talk to someone I look up to and genuinely respect. When I started this podcast titled ‘authentically’ after seeing the ins and outs of what is talked about inside newsrooms and from my experience in the field, I knew there needed to be a space for something more than just soundbites and click-bait headlines in this day and age of news (opinion talking heads) swirling left and right on a pandemic, social justice, and your local stories. When I first started this, one of the first dudes that came to mind whom I thought would be perfect for this show…he was none other than this man. A man of God, a man well-respected in the music industry as a hip hop and spoken word artist, a man who has lived out fighting for social justice before it was trending as a change agent and activist. He’s a husband, a father, and a coffee curator. What more could you ask for in a podcast where I aim to keep it real, talk about being a good husband and family man, actual good coffee (the real ones know what I’m talking about), sports, and…Jesus. Because this show is dedicated to Christ. And no matter where you are in your life, it’s my hope that you are encouraged by this talk.
Ladies and gentlemen, without further ado: here is Dr. John Perkins.Enough said.Take the mic and take it away, Dr. Perkins. With 91 years of living, this man is honestly one of the most profound, knowledgeable, agents for true, authentic, tangible change fighting for justice in this world today. Background on Dr. Perkins via his foundation:"Dr. John Perkins is one of the last living civil rights leaders who fought for equality and reconciliation throughout most of his life. He also has...received 16 honorary doctorates. Now, at 91 years-old, Dr. Perkins has written his final book, Count It All Joy: The Ridiculous Paradox of Suffering (Moody Publishers) that reflects on examples of suffering, why we suffer, and the joys of suffering. When he was seven months old, John Perkins’ mother died of malnutrition. At 16, his older brother was murdered by police. As a civil rights activist, John was tortured and beaten by police. He endured familial suffering with the murder of his sister and the death of two sons. John recently battled cancer. In Count It All Joy, Dr. Perkins reflects on the persecuted life of Job in the Bible and how we can learn to lean into suffering, stand alongside others who suffer, and trust God to make us better through our suffering."With everything he’s been through during the Civil Rights era leading up to today, having overcome so much adversity and wrongs done to him in his life, he’s flipped the script and done the unthinkable...actually loving and forgiving others who've hurt him and has dedicated his life to serving others, helping countless communities thrive with the Dr. John & Vera Mae Perkins Foundation.Couldn't think of anyone better to conclude this series as I approached the topic of social justice talking to NBA players & coaches about what seemingly everyone was talking about in 2020 leading into this year: 'social justice'. For many, maybe it was just a buzzword. Well, listen to this. Dr. Perkins lives out what actual justice is everyday and explains what he thinks about 'social justice'.For Dr. John Perkins, social justice is more than just a buzzword or trend, he’s dedicated his life to advocating for ...people. Including specifically underserved minority communities. A true, absolute warrior in the faith, it was an honor, joy, and privilege to be able to speak with Dr. Perkins. What an example for all of us, especially as we face so much unrest, uneasiness, injustice in our world today. With the NBA being at the forefront seemingly of a lot of the discussion, here’s what Biyombo learned from 2020 leading into this year. Bismack had some really insightful perspective on the whole situation and it was a joy to talk with him. I hope you enjoy the conversation!Biyombo also has played a majority of his career, including last season, on the Charlotte Hornets…a team whose majority owner just so happens to be…Michael Jordan. The journey continues and this next stop🗺️: Los Angeles🌊.First of all, I have to include in here the moments experiencing one of wifey’s many lovely authentic special surprises for her hubs. In this case it was when we were dating when she straight up surprised me with tickets a Pistons-Lakers game (if you know me, you know I’M A DETROIT FAN ALL DAY, INCLUDING A PISTONS FAN, so this was really one of the best gifts anyone haas ever given me) when I first visited her in LA after she visited me in Michigan when I asked her to be my girlfriend….and another time when she surprised me for my birthday with Lakers tickets!Had to include a mini-vlog in here because when we talk Lakers, I gotta’ include my wifey for lifey, Mrs Amber J Lap. Grateful to Jesus for my genuine, godly Proverbs 31 beautiful best woman of all time, the GOAT, Amber J. I love you, queen! Also included in this next episode is something I felt led to say here about getting your dreams, no matter what space of life you’re in-tying this into …Space Jam! One of my favorite movies, including the newest Space Jam: A New Legacy. Both are incredible. And you already know who’s in the second one: LeBron James. LeBron’s teammate IRL? One of the only teammates coming back to the team from last year: Talen Horton-Tucker. And it’s THT whom I spoke with after his team faced the Suns in LA earlier this year. To continue the social justice conversation in this series, to ensure that it’s more than just a trend but an everyday, respecting, loving, embracing diversity and equality thing. The shadow proves the sunshine. What does that mean to you? Let's take a dive into how certain adverse circumstances in your life can happen actually for good, that there's purpose in the pain, that though the clouds may be there for a season, they'll pass by and the light will radiate and pierce through the darkness...there's proof that light wins and shines brighter. Let's found out how. This is a continuation in my NBA miniseries, talking to NBA players and coaches around the league about what they learned from 2020 and how they're applying it to their lives today.
