By Newsbreak Producer, Rachel Vadi - Hundreds of ANC members and supporters have gathered at the King Zwelithini Stadium in Umlazi, south of Durban today - as part of the party's Siyanqoba Rally. A high level delegation is currently entering the stadium - which is expected to be addressed by ANC NEC member Doctor Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma. SABC News Reporter, Nonkululeko Hlophe says it is a festive atmosphere painted in the party colours with members and supporters singing struggle songs.
By Newsbreak Producer, Taliesha Naidoo - The husband of a slain Amanzimtoti pastor, who went missing since Sunday, has been found. Werner de Jager was found yesterday morning in his car in a sugar cane filed on the south coast of KwaZulu-Natal. It's believed he was found in a disorientated state. De Jager is the husband of murdered Dutch Reform Church pastor Liezel de Jager, who was found strangled in her front yard on October 13th. KZN Police spokesperson, Colonel Thembeka Mbhele says police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the De Jager's disappearance....

As the local government elections approach, many voters have expressed frustration over poor service delivery, with some threatening not not participate in the polls. Municipal elections are often marred by low voter turnout. In 2011, voter turnout stood at 57.6 percent. It improved slightly to at least 58 percent in 2016. In part one of this two part interview, Dr. Nadvi unpacks the power of the ballot in a developing democracy...

By Newsbreak Producer Taliesha Naidoo - Being prepared for school with the right stationery will offer a better learning experience for a child. That's according to Ghairunisa Johnstone-Cassiem, director of Mustadafin Foundation, which will be hosting the annual "Back-to-School Santa Shoe Box Drive". The initiative aims to assist 500 children from low-income communities in the Western Cape with stationery for the upcoming academic year. Since the first drive in 2015, the Foundation has helped over 3,000 learners start their school year with brand new stationery. Johnstone-Cassiem says the school stationery list is too demanding, especially for underprivileged children...

The unlikely heroes of the tragic event were six fishermen who plied their trade in the Durban Harbour. The men - who are commonly referred to as the "Padavatan Six", responded to cries for help when the Umgeni River burst its banks at Springfield in 1917. It's believed the authorities at the time would not risk their lives to help the struggling community on the tragic day. Masla Pillay, who is the grandson of one of the fisherman named - Mariemuthoo Padavatan, says the unsung heroes deserve more recognition for their act of bravery...
By Newsbreak Producer, Genevieve Lanka - A time of reflection and prayer for the Ahmed Timol family, as today marks the 50th anniversary of the death of the anti-apartheid activist in police custody. As part of the commemoration, the Timol family together with UN Human Rights Commission Chair Yasmin Sooka and the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation laid wreaths at his grave at the Roodepoort Muslim Cemetery in Creswell Park, Johannesburg. Timol was killed in detention on this day in 1971. His body was thrown out of a window on the 10th floor of John Vorster Square Police Station, which is now the Johannesburg Central Police Station. The family will also be hosting a commemoration outside the station this evening. Our reporter Pearl Magubane describes this morning's emotional scenes...

By Newsbreak Producer, Genevieve Lanka - Energy Analyst Chris Yelland says the only solution to the country electricity crisis, is for consumers to take their energy futures in their own hands - and generate their own power. Eskom has started implementing stage four load-shedding, which will continue until five o'clock on Friday morning. The power utility says this is due to a shortage of generation capacity and units tripping at several power stations. Yelland says if consumer focus on creating their own power capacities, then the burden is reduced on the national grid....

Today marks the 50th commemoration of the death of anti-apartheid activist Ahmed Timol, who was killed in detention on this day in 1971. His body was thrown out of a window on the 10th floor of John Vorster Square Police Station. An inquest at the time ruled the death as suicide. However, a 2017 inquest by Judge Billy Mothle led to former apartheid-era police officer Joao Rodrigues being charged for murder. Balton was among the friends and family who laid wreaths at Timol's grave this morning...

By Newsbreak Producer Taliesha Naidoo - It's all systems go as the Matric Class of 2021 commence the National Senior Certificate examinations. Close to 900,000 learners from across the country will sit down for English Paper 1 this morning. The last exam is set for December the 7th. In KwaZulu-Natal, a record total of 201,107 learners will write the exams. This is the largest figure the KZN Department of Education has registered in the last six years. KZN Education MEC Kwazi Mshengu will be monitoring the start of the exams at schools in Phoenix and KwaMashu, north of Durban today. The MEC's spokesperson, Kwazi Mthethwa says the department is running a tight ship to ensure no irregularities are reported...

The site will go live on the 1st of November, providing minute-by-minute coverage of the local government elections. It is alleged that the man was in his vehicle when unknown suspects ambushed and shot him multiple times. Emer-G-Med spokesperson, Kyle van Reneen says the man was declared dead on the scene....
By Newsbreak Producer, Taliesha Naidoo - The family of Phoenix murder accused, Jeethendra Jaikissoon, is calling for a independent investigation into his death. Jaikissoon died in a Durban hospital on Friday afternoon - after being unwell in the Westville Prison - where he was incarcerated on charges of murder and attempted murder. The charges relate to the alleged attack of five men in Phoenix, north of Durban, during July's looting, unrest and violence. Spokesperson for the Jaikisson family, Dr Jonathan Annipen says the family are devastated and inconsolable. He says the family demand answers on the circumstances surrounding their son's death.....
By Newsbreak Producer, Genevieve Lanka - The date for former president Jacob Zuma's trial in his corruption case has been set for April the 11th next year in the High Court in Pietermaritzburg. The announcement of the date comes after Judge Piet Koen dismissed Zuma's special plea application for the recusal of State prosecutor Advocate Billy Downer. The application was part of the special plea Zuma had entered in the corruption case against him. Zuma and French arms company Thales are facing charges of corruption, racketeering and money laundering in connection with South Africa's multi-billion-rand arms deal in the 90's. Legal expert, Doctor Llewelyn Curlewis says while Zuma's legal team does have the option to appeal the ruling, it is unlikely that it will be granted. Curlewis says it appears that Zuma will indeed have his day in court...
By Newsbreak Producer Genevieve Lanka - Independent Energy Analyst - Kenny Andrew - says City Power in Johannesburg should use the added capacity it acquired through an independent power provider, to supplement electricity supply to its consumers during load-shedding. Eskom confirmed that City Power has requested to be partially excluded from load-shedding. City Power recently concluded an additional capacity power purchase agreement with the Kelvin Power Station, securing an additional power supply capacity of 220 MW. Andrew says City Power's request seems strange, as it should be using its additional power to buffer the current issues around load-shedding...
