Dr. Blackburn’s research revealed protective structures at the ends of chromosomes and discovered the role of telomerase in maintaining telomere length. She has served as president of the Institute for Cancer Research and the American Society for Cell Biology, and has received several important medical research awards, including the Albert Lasker Basic Medical Research Award. In addition, she is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the Royal Society of London, and was named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time magazine.
