The One Thing: The Table of the Kingdom
Growgroup Discussion Starters
Know Christ as King
K1 Dan says that when Jesus is present, the meal table becomes a proxy for the Kingdom of Heaven. In what ways does Jesus’s choice of dining partners challenge your assumptions about who belongs at the table of the Kingdom?
K2 "If Jesus is establishing a new kingdom, he’s going to be upsetting some of the social power structures". What social or cultural structures in your own life or community might Jesus be seeking to upset? Grow in Groups
K3 Jesus warns against inviting people who can repay you, hinting that it's a social transaction that is "not good for our souls". How does seeking reciprocity—whether in relationships, good deeds, or even charitable giving—hinder our spiritual growth?
K4 Dan suggests that by inviting those who are not like us, we can get to know them and challenge our own conclusions about them. When have you found that intentionally spending time with someone different from you has led to personal growth or a changed perspective?
Show Up and Serve
S1 We end by asking, "Who do you need to get to know better?" and "Who is not LIKE you that you need to get acquainted with?". Brainstorm practical, tangible ways that you can apply the principle of radical hospitality in your own life this week.
S2 When we practice radical hospitality, the church becomes a "showcase of Jesus' new kingdom". What does this "showcase" look like in a real-world context, and what might be the biggest challenge in making it a reality in your community?
