4 - dissociation explained
Description
What is dissociation? Why does it happen?
And what does it feel like for me personally?
This episode is all about dissociation - the safety feature that our brains use to protect us from overwhelm. Join me as we de-mystify & de-stigmatise this poorly understood phenomenon.
Dissociative disorders are lesser known mental illnesses to the general public, but the stigma still runs rampant throughout pop culture. Ever heard of multiple personality disorder? Perhaps you've seen a horror movie in which the villain has a whole host of scary, alternate personalities... This is the common misrepresentation of Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), and other types of dissociative disorders, that we see in the media. I can assure you that as the people actually LIVING with these disorders, we are the ones experiencing the most fear - dissociative disorders develop as a response to trauma, and demonising them doesn't help anyone.
I recorded this in the midst of a dissociative episode, hence why it is a bit melancholy and poorly articulated at times. I was so close to re-recording it, but decided that I don't want to censor my experiences. That's what this podcast is all about - it's raw, and it's vulnerable. Shame feeds the cycle of mental illness, so let's f*ck it off
happy listening, and let's get weird
