Digest

This podcast delves into the complex and disturbing case of Brenda Schaeffer's disappearance and the subsequent investigation that uncovered the dark truth behind her fate. The story begins with the introduction of Mel Ignato, a seemingly charming and successful man who was Brenda's boyfriend. However, as the podcast progresses, a different picture emerges, revealing Ignato's manipulative and abusive nature. The podcast explores the dynamics of their relationship, highlighting how Ignato gradually isolated Brenda from her friends and family, controlling her through manipulation and abuse. The investigation into Brenda's disappearance focuses on Ignato as the prime suspect, but the lack of physical evidence initially hinders the police's efforts. The turning point comes with the testimony of Marianne Shore, Ignato's former girlfriend, who reveals the horrific details of Brenda's murder and the abuse she endured. Despite the evidence presented, Ignato is acquitted of murder due to the jury's inability to reach a consensus on key evidence. However, the discovery of incriminating photographs and Brenda's jewelry hidden in Ignato's former home leads to his confession and conviction for perjury. The podcast concludes with a discussion of Ignato's release from prison and the lingering fear among the community that he could potentially commit similar crimes again.

Show Notes

On September 24, 1988, Brenda Sue Schaefer was sexually tortured and murdered in Louisville, Kentucky. Brenda’s boyfriend Mel Ignatow was tried for the crime. Despite the testimony of his ex-girlfriend Mary Ann Shore, who led police to the spot where Brenda Sue’s body was buried, jurors found Ignatow not guilty for lack of evidence. However, six months later new incriminating evidence — Brenda’s jewelry and photos from the night of her murder — were discovered in Ignatow’s former home.
