Description

Physical therapist practice is rooted in exercise prescription. The capacity to fully understand a patient's exercise response requires measurement and interpretation of vital sign responses with exertional challenges. This lecture will offer multiple examples of the difference that a therapist can make in their patient outcomes using equipment available in all practice settings. #VitalsAreVITAL


Jennifer M Ryan, PT, DPT, MS, Board Certified Clinical Specialist in Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Physical Therapy shares her insight and expertise on "Vital Sign Measurement and Interpretation."

  • Apply the rationale for why we measure vital signs

  • Apply proper safeguards to reduce measurement error

  • Identify normal adult and pediatric measures of all vital signs

  • Interpret vital signs in relation to each other and the patient presentation with assist


About the Speaker

Jennifer M Ryan, PT, DPT, MS, Board Certified Clinical Specialist in Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Physical Therapy graduated from the Physical Therapy program at the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1990 and went on to complete both a Master of Science in Physical Therapy and a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science. In July 2006 and 2016, she was awarded board certification as a Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Clinical Specialist by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialization. Throughout her physical therapy career, she has specialized in physical therapy care for critically ill patients and their families.


In her current position at Northwestern University, she is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy and Human Movement Sciences. Dr Ryan was the recipient of the IPTA Physical Therapist of the Year award in 2008, the recipient of the Mary Sinnott Award for Excellence in Acute Care Physical Therapy in 2012 and she was the 2014 Acute Care Section Lecture Award recipient. Her teaching is in the area of cardiovascular and pulmonary and acute care physical therapy both in her primary position and in continuing education seminars.
