Description

On this episode of The Life of Phys Podcast, I’m joined by Devin Allen, a self-taught artist and photographer from Baltimore whose work has become a global symbol of resistance, resilience, and Black life.

Devin first rose to national attention in 2015, when his photograph of the Baltimore Uprising was published on the cover of TIME Magazine, making him only the third amateur photographer ever featured on TIME’s cover. In 2020, TIME once again honored his artistry by selecting one of his images from a Black Lives Matter protest to grace their cover.

His career includes being named the first Gordon Parks Foundation Fellow (2017), a nomination for an NAACP Image Award for his debut book A Beautiful Ghetto (Haymarket Books), and serving as a 2020 Ambassador for Leica Camera AG.

Devin’s photographs have appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, New York Magazine, and Aperture. His work is also included in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History & Culture, the Reginald F. Lewis Museum, the Jule Collins Smith Museum, and The Studio Museum in Harlem.

Most recently, Devin released his second book: No Justice, No Peace: From the Civil Rights Movement to Black Lives Matter (Legacy Lit/Hachette, 2022), cementing his voice as both a visual artist and storyteller of the movement.

In this episode, Devin and I discuss:

  • His journey from self-taught photographer to TIME Magazine covers

  • The power of photography as activism and social commentary

  • His books A Beautiful Ghetto and No Justice, No Peace

  • How Gordon Parks and Black photographers shaped his vision

  • Why documenting Black life and community remains at the heart of his work

This is an inspiring and powerful conversation with Devin Allen, showing how art can fuel movements and preserve the stories that shape history.
