Lainy Newton has always aspired to be a mother. The story opens with a young Lainy, who, together with her friend Kate, uses dolls to recreate a birthing experience. The girls, united by the profound loss of their mothers, assume their roles: Lainy as the laboring patient, expressing herself with expletives, and Kate as the encouraging friend, shouting “Push!” Despite Kate's aversion to this game and her uncertainty regarding motherhood, she supports Lainy, who believes that becoming a parent is one of life’s most significant accomplishments.
