My Turn - Part Two: An Earth Honoring Ethic
Description
This first series (this is the second episode of six) addresses the relationship of Humans to all other Life on Planet Earth.
OUTLINE OF KEY IDEAS
1. Science tells us that the Universe is 13-14 billion years old; there are over 200 billion galaxies; the Milky Way galaxy where our Sun is found has over 100 billion stars.
2. Science tells us that the Universe is always on the move: planets rotate, and revolve around their stars; stars rotate within their galaxies
3. Earth is between 4 and 4 1/2 billion years old; modern humans (on two legs, looking like today's humans) have been around for only 200,000 years (a short time)
4. First takeaway: Think more about our place in the universe's story.
5. Dr. Larry Rasmussen's book, An Earth Honoring Faith, is compelling
6. "The powers of the world’s faiths are not up to this present task of calling forth tenacity, commitment, loyalty, and sacrifice partly because of their pre-scientific worldview"
7. "Our present Earth/human relationship is the modern version of perhaps the longest-lived and most oppressive ethic of all: the ethic of masters and slaves.”
8. It's time to re-frame religion's creation stories from the universe's long perspective.
QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION
How do you see Humans in the scheme of Life?
How do you see the other species?
What is the "message" from the Creation stories we were taught?
Should we update the pre-scientific versions of Creation to help future generations to be more respectful?
