Nina Planck on replacing the industrial food chain with local foods values
Description
Nina Planck tells us about doing farmers markets as a kid growing up on Wheatland Vegetable Farms in Northern Virginia in the 70s and 80s, and how that experience led to her starting a series of farmers markets in London, England. We talk about how growers can optimize their own farmers markets, emphasizing the need for them to expand their offerings beyond fruits and vegetables to include meat, dairy, seafood, wine, and anything else produced locally.
We also talk about how ideas and recipes from some of Nina’s books, including The Farmer’s Market Cookbook and The Real Food Cookbook, can help market shoppers who are not used to cooking with whole foods break out of the routine of using processed foods. Zooming out, we discuss the impact of agricultural subsidies on the food system, and talk about how to re-make the industrial food chain with local foods values.
