this is absolutely devastating to listen to.
I really miss ancient history.
Another excellent episode and a fitting ending to the series on the pacific theater
:)
sometimes I think that there's something wrong with me for finding entertainment in the stories of others suffering. But if so than I'm not alone. One good thing I always walk away with after hearing accounts like this though is perspective. If you're alive today in the United States than you're very privileged, regardless of what group you indentify with. Things could be so much worse. Nobody decided to be born when and where they were not did they earn the privilege to be born into one time and place verses another. I'm very thankful not to have existed anywhere near Japan 1930-1950.
Loved this podcast. Thanks! I need to make a correction though. The sand on Iwo Jima is not fine. It is coarse. The thickness of the individual volcanic grains prevents it from sticking together, thus keeping it from holding form. I was stationed on Iwo 85/86.
if your offended from first hand accounts from soldiers there and from the Japanese people there. Then this podcast ain't for you . Dan breaks it down how it was and we have to deal with it . What people do in the ugliness of war! Dan this is one of your best series of all time, thank you
Hearing about what happened in Manila to women and children at the hands of Jspanese soldiers just about had me in tears.Hearing about the bombing of Tokyo amd other cities with thousands of incendiary bombs at the hands of American soldiers also just about had me in tears. But we need to know it all and do whatever we can not to repeat it
Positively awful. Worst work Carlin has ever done.
5:29 - "I can't help but notice we haven't used nuclear weapons since." France - [Looking around nervously.]
I listened to this yesterday. Dan's reading first hand accounts of real events that are worse than any horror movie I have ever seen. Last night I hugged my children a little tighter and prayed they never have to see such things.
keep it going Dan
war is HELL for everyone. friends ,enemies and family members all die in a meat grinder all in the name of patriotism.
I stopped listening at 3 hours in. Dan, this is by far the worst single episode you've created, and I suggest you seek psychological help. when you have to go out of your way to tell people you're not being gratuitous about a half-dozen times you probably are being gratuitous. many of your subject matters have been incredibly violent before, but nothing has ever come near the enjoyment you obviously have from the violence in this episode. I don't mean this to be rude, offensive, or snarky. you need psychological evaluation
almost two hours in at this point and it's pretty clear Dan is fascinated with gratuitous violence. Dan, you've spent over 25 hours at this point describing how brutal the Japanese were as enemies. We get it by now. If there's someone listening who still doesn't understand that they are probably too stupid to ever understand it. I find myself skipping over parts of this because I really don't need to hear about how brutal the Japs were. I get it. at this point it's just lowering the quality of the series.
17 minutes in and Dan makes a great point: rationality was not only discouraged, but was punished in Japan and Germany. it's almost like America today when a person publicly States the obvious, that affirmative action is systemic racism and codified bigotry, that person is likely to be fired and cancelled via the fascists on social media. when someone points out the obvious: black lives matter is a terrorist organization the fascists left comes for them.
Awwwwwwwwwwwwww yeah!!
"And I think to myself, what a wonderful world"
It feels like Christmas when a new episode magically appears in my notifications. Looking forward to ignoring all work and family responsibilities for the next 5 hours and 45 minutes.
praise the lord!
