Play-fuelled Leadership: Balancing AI and Education with Geoff Stead Commenting about the PAUSE, PLAY, CONNECT Ⓡ philosophy 'What is widely established is a good thing for those busy professionals with manically stressed out lives as you were describing is to find a way of partitioning your day up or having a time when you sort of reflect and plan on what’s coming. It’s really bad practice to rush into the next day and it is important to stop and pause and reflect a little bit - which is the pause. Lots of people, I know who succeed at senior levels in the workplace meditate and have other practices like breath holding practices, yoga, which is perhaps not quite play, but creates a moment when you disassociate from the work you need to do. I think my takeaway I’m having is that I need to have more active time to be more playful in my day-to-day. At work I’m a bit playful, it’s common that we arrange hack days and include moments of creativity. Change the pace or mood in a meeting by getting everyone to stand up and move. Having levels of goofiness. Helps to lower levels of stress and get stuff done so I’d like to mix these things into the day, and it makes me feel more human.'   About Geoff: Geoff is a digital product leader. Season 2 Introduction

Season 2 Introduction

2022-04-0202:00

"Hello and welcome back to Season 2 of the Play Healing Podcast. Hello I’m Debi and I’m the author of the Play Healing Flow: PAUSE PLAY CONNECTⓇ - three words that can make such a difference in our lives. I train people about the importance of PAUSING and tuning into where we are, at tuning in to where our child is at. Playing how are using the tool  to connect with children and to use their language which is PLAY to be engage them and make them feel seen and heard. In this season I’m going to be talking about how over 80% of the total the parents I work with struggle to PLAY. Either because they haven’t got the time but feel like they should or they just simply don’t enjoy it. And that’s okay because we have to start somewhere, but I know the Power of PLAY and actually PLAY is related to Joy to happiness and the opposite of PLAY can be rigidity, some people would say depression. So we want to be moving towards playfulness. We want to be moving towards enjoying the life we have in front of us and I believe that there are some very simple ways that I can step forward into this and discover the true nature and value of play in our busy lives. So, welcome to ‘Too busy not to play,’ the series that we can integrate play in giving you permission to play your way. The app that transforms you into a playful parenting hero   About Debi:   Debi is the founder of Play Healing and a mother of two teenage daughters. Debi coaches parents online and has featured on BBC Radio to talk about parenting, home schooling and preventing tech addiction. She has worked in education with children aged 4-16 for over 20 years, performed as a musician for 25 years and studied a Post Grad in Therapeutic Play.  She is the author the PLAY HEALING PAUSE Model helping parents to Pause, Play and Connect deeply with their children in a fast-paced, digital age.    LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/debi-john-159343a8/   Music used on the podcast written by Debi John and produced by the amazing Paul Frazer.   About Ben Geliher   Ben Geliher, CEO and founder of Caper has been developing and project managing the Caper app for families for the last year or so thanks to seed funding from LEGO and Founders Factory. He is an ethical and highly experienced game designer with a passion to encourage connection between parent and child.   https://www.linkedin.com/in/bengeliher/   https://www.caper.co Resources  22 Screen Free Ways to Build Connection with your Tween/Teen - https://playhealing-tween.gr8.com  Play Healing website - https://www.playhealing.com/Play Healing Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/playhealingofficial/ Play Healing Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/playhealingparent/ If you think that working with me may be something you’d like to do then contact me at playhealing@outlook.com and we can arrange a chat.   Managing tech for emotional health course coming soon so do send me a message or check out the website for more information.     Value Bombs:      Ben: I’m not a saint being in the games industry they use a lot of the mechanics of addiction, if you look at the top grossing apps on the app store games in the chart they use elements of gambling and addiction.    There’s a lot of debate in the ethics of game design.   Extrinsic motivators are points in the game where you reward your player eg. points coins, items.    When we were looking at caper we wanted the intrinsic motivators including: Why would we want to play with our kids? What makes it fun to play with your kid?   Often it’s about pretend play, physical connection, running cuddling and playing in the space you feel comfortable in.      Often there’s an effort gap when you’ve been working to then be in a place where you are able to click into ‘play mode’ and give your child focussed attention. It can be really tough…not everyone can make up these magical worlds, not everyone is good at doing pretend play. So Caper provides a backbone a story with loveable characters and then encourage you with suggestions and starters.   Debi : Creativity is so important and a way of future proofing our kids. We don’t need them to be able to recall facts - we have google but we will need children that can think outside the box whether physically or digitally.  It’s important to give parents a framework when it comes to managing tech in a healthy way.   Ben: Lego seem to care the most about play and the philosophy of play and creativity. Lego itself has infinite possibilities.  One of the other key factors is that sometimes parents find it boring to play. Playing a board game is boring for many parents themselves.  I do not feel playful when Im feeling stressed. Some parents really find play boring so we wanted the characters to have a pixar quality that parents can also enjoy the content as well as the child. You want the parent to have fun with the kid as that aids connection.   To download the app or for more information check out: https://www.caper.co     Sponsors To grow your audience with a quality list and market products check out - https://www.getresponse.com/?a=KAwgJm7CYh  Special Offer for Listeners: To get 10% off Teddo Cards, enter PLAYHEALING at the checkout. https://www.teddo-play.com   Support the Play Healing Podcast   If you fancy treating yourself of a loved one to some Neals Yard Organics Products then support this podcast by using this link: uk.nyrorganic.com/shop/debijohn Podcast Production: Debi John

Small yet powerful changes that help to prevent tech addiction and gaming disorder. Navigating the online world safely. About Debi: Debi is the founder of Play Healing and a mother of two teenage daughters. Debi coaches parents online and has featured on BBC Radio to talk about parenting, homeschooling, and preventing tech addiction. She has worked in education with children aged 4-16 for over 20 years, performed as a musician for 25 years and studied a Post Grad in Therapeutic Play.  She is the author of the PLAY HEALING PAUSE Model helping parents to Pause, Play, and Connect deeply with their children in a fast-paced, digital age.    LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/debi-john-159343a8/   Music used on the podcast written by Debi John and produced by the amazing Paul Frazer.   About Michael Jacobus:   Michael Jacobus is a life-long, career Camp Director and youth-development specialist. An internationally recognized author, child-development professional and outdoor education guru, Michael founded Reset Summer Camp after witnessing, (within his own family) the dangers and challenges of screen-addicted youth.   Michael has assembled a team of unmatched professionals to help him coordinate this effort in the hopes of breaking the cycle of tech addiction and overuse and give our children real-world Life Skills and tools to build a solid, successful future for themselves.   https://www.resetsummercamp.com     Support the Play Healing Podcast   Shopping via the Play Healing Neals Yard Organics link: uk.nyrorganic.com/shop/debijohn   Resources    Free e-book: https://playhealing-bb694.gr8.com 22 Screen-Free Ways to Build Connection with your Tween/Teen - https://playhealing-tween.gr8.com  Play Healing website - https://www.playhealing.com/ Play Healing Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/playhealingparent/ Play Healing Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/playhealingofficial/   Introduction:    Over the last year or so I’ve been in contact with Micheal from Reset Summer Camps and have been so impressed with the holistic approach they have to tech addiction as they work with the parents as well as the kids.   The Play Healing PAUSE 12-Week Mastermind is in its last month and the feedback I’ve had so far has been really moving and so excited about the behavioral and emotional changes going on in the children’s lives due to the courage and openness of the parents who have decided to pause and consider a new way of parenting.   If you think that working with me may be something you’d like to do then contact me at playhealing@outlook.com and I’d love to hear from you.      Value Bombs:    In the situation where we have many hours of detachment between parent and child as they are gaming in their room there seems to be a clear link with this aggression and the challenging mental health issues that present themselves.   After gaming disorder has been recognized by the World Health Organisation the program was expanded as a digital detox program because many of the kids were watching YouTube or being on social media and suffering from the same side effects.   Aggression is the number 1 symptom we come across…   Aggression, lack of sleep, depression, lack of motivation are all symptoms we come across regularly.   Tip: Be engaged with the children and the families that your children are hanging out with to cut down the predator or language concerns. Instead of just hoping they're ok with their headphones in their room change the environment to keep them safe: e.g Homework in kitchen, phones out of rooms.   “It’s not just can you fix my kid, it’s can you fix the family model.”   To support the podcast go and treat yourself to something special at my Neals Yard Shop:   uk.nyrorganic.com/shop/debijohn Free 200ml shower gel for orders over £50 this week. About Debi: Debi is the founder of Play Healing and a mother of two teenage daughters. Debi coaches parents online and has featured on BBC Radio to talk about parenting, homeschooling and preventing tech addiction. She is a trauma-informed parenting specialist and it was a dream come true to have her on this podcast. Manon is a breath of fresh air full of empathy and wisdom so you’re in for a real treat.   We had such a lovely long chat that I’ve had to break our conversation up into two interviews. So make sure if you haven’t already done so, to subscribe and you won’t miss the next part when it comes out in a few weeks.  The Play Healing PAUSE 12-Week Mastermind is in its last month and the feedback I’ve had so far has been really moving and so excited about the behavioural and emotional changes going on in the children’s lives due to the courage and openness of the parents who have decided to pause and consider a new way of parenting.    If you think that working with me may be something you’d like to do then contact me at playhealing@outlook.com and I’d love to hear from you.    It was the first time I met Manon so when we first got on the call We chatted about our journeys into parent coaching and she started by asking me about my experience in education, music and therapy but I’m going to start the interview just after that as time is precious.  So we’re going to launch straight in… enjoy!     Value Bombs:  For many of us even though we have the right information and know HOW we want to raise our children, many times we can’t because of unresolved trauma getting in the way. When we have dysregulation in the nervous system, this causes us to live in this fight or flight response.   It’s key to heal from our past so we can relate with our children.   Debi: “At Play Healing part of the Play Healing PAUSE Model focuses on attunement as I believe this is a game-changer for myself as a parent and the parents I work with.   I’d like to talk to you more about attunement. Attunement seems to be the game-changer…”   Manon: ‘When we don’t attune with our kids, they get angry, because their needs are not met. Usually, when there is a lack of attunement there are big rages…   It’s hard to tune to our children coming back to our body is coming back to those gut feelings telling us what is up with my child at that moment.   In my workshops, I often ask the parent: ‘How do you know that something is happening with your child?   Now tune in to your body, how are you feeling now?’   Our body is constantly communicating with us when we listen to our body again we find it easier to tune into their needs.   There often felt like a disconnect from my head to my body…   We live in a society that doesn’t respect the connection with the body. The impulse the gut feeling…we shut down that part of the body..We’ve practised shut down…   To be able to play we need to be in the safe and connected space.    I’m looking forward to the Time to Pause Event on Friday so let me know if you want to come on Facebook.   Click here to be part of the evening but I can’t guarantee samples in time now x    https://playhealing-19611.gr8.com   uk.nyrorganic.com/shop/debijohn   Remember to PAUSE and look after yourselves guys x Serious love to you all x Debs x    Sponsors   To grow your audience with a quality list and market products check out - https://www.getresponse.com/?a=KAwgJm7CYh   Special Offer for Listeners:   To get 10% off Teddo Cards, enter PLAYHEALING at the checkout. https://www.teddo-play.com   Podcast Production:   Special thanks to Pete Sene for producing this podcast and to the amazing people who funded the production in my GoFundMe Campaign.
