The One Thing: Jesus is better than a building

Know Christ as King
K1 If our church building suddenly disappeared tomorrow, what would actually change for us? Would our faith, worship, and ministry carry on? Why or why not?

G1 In verses 5–6, the disciples are impressed by the beauty of the temple. Why do you think people can so easily be drawn to the visible, tangible parts of faith (buildings, music, programs) rather than to God Himself?
G2 Jesus tells them that even the most impressive religious structures can come down. How does this challenge the ways we attach our sense of stability, identity, or faithfulness to physical things?
G3 What are some modern “temples”—things that are good gifts but can subtly move from aids to worship into objects of worship?
G4 In verses 7–11 Jesus speaks of upheaval, uncertainty, and things falling apart. How does trusting Jesus help us stay steady when the externals of life (or church life) feel shaky?
G5 Jesus promises His presence and His words when trials come (vv.14–15). How have you seen God strengthen you or give you words when you felt unprepared or overwhelmed?
G6 Verses 16–19 speak of endurance. What does faithful endurance look like today—not in dramatic persecution only, but in everyday discipleship?

S1 Reflect honestly: What “temple” or “aid to worship” in your own life is at risk of becoming an idol—something you might cling to more tightly than Jesus Himself? What is one step you can take this week to re-centre your heart on Him?
