3rd exchange: More trust and less control
Description
Trust is a value of our daily living together. It plays and always played an enormous role in our private environment, within the family and with friends and relatives. Moreover, trust is a our basis for stability and security.
Nonetheless, we have been tending to use supervision, controlling and monitoring over the recent decades rather than trust – in society as well as in organizations. With increasing complexity and dynamics, this is a reliable and helpful way to avoid chaos. In our projects we often get to hear sentences like “we cannot do it like this, the employees are not able to do this!” – without even trying to give it a chance and trust the system and every single employee. We are always being explained that some employees do not want that, but rather prefer clear order and control, otherwise they feel overwhelmed. Of course, this is true to a certain extent as companies have been working on this way of work for a very long time and certainly there should always be a manageable framework not to overburden a system. But still, there should be room for trust so new things can develop. And please consider: trust has a gammy foot, it builds very slowly compared to mistrust and can be destroyed with one mistake, not so mistrust
