Description

Conflict-related sexual violence, or CRSV, remains a pervasive issue in modern warfare, yet its rarely prosecuted due to complex legal challenges. While international laws exist, proving these crimes often requires demonstrating they were part of a larger, organized plan. New approaches are emerging to address this, focusing on expanding evidence gathering and survivor-centric efforts. Historically, sexual violence in conflict was largely ignored, but landmark cases in the nineteen nineties began to change this. The UN Security Council has reinforced legal foundations through resolutions, emphasizing survivor protection and perpetrator accountability. However, actual prosecutions are still uncommon and complex, as current evidentiary requirements were not designed with CRSV in mind.
