Update: 2024-09-17
Description
The title illustrates a simple yet important fact of life...we cannot wait until we are thirsty to begin digging a well. If we do, we will likely die of thirst before we get the water we need. We must prepare ahead of time, before the need arises.
There are times of spiritual ‘thirst’ If we wait until such times to "dig our wells", we may be too late. We need to be ‘digging our wells’ no
We need to be digging wells because:
A Day of judgment is coming. - It will be a day of salvation for some and condemnation for others. Some will hear good news Matthew 25:34 Others will hear terrible words - Matthew 25:41 It will be too late to begin ‘digging wells’ if we are spiritually thirsty on that day!
We Have Times of Temptation - The Christian life is a mine field fraught with temptation because of our adversary, the devil 1 Peter 5:8 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Because of our own fleshly desires are at work in us Mark 7:21-23 For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.”
Temptations should not be taken lightly it is deceptive. We can become hardened by the deceitfulness of sin - Hebrews 3:12-13
There Will Be Times of Tribulation - The apostle Paul warned the disciples in Antioch that it is through many tribulations that they would enter the kingdom of God - Acts 14:21-22
The trials or tribulations we may face can be quite diverse. Some because we are Christians. Others because we share in the common frailties of fallen man, sickness, pain, death; economic recession, loss of jobs; terrorism, war, natural calamities.
The wells of salvation provided by God offering the waters of life Isaiah 12:1-3 You will say in that day: “I will give thanks to you, O Lord, for though you were angry with me, your anger turned away, that you might comfort me. “Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and will not be afraid for the Lord God is my strength and my song and he has become my salvation.” With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation.
God offers the wells necessary to quench our thirst in times of spiritual drought. Our task, then, may be similar to that of Isaac's...The wells of his father Abraham had been stopped up by the Philistines Genesis 26:15
He had to re-dig the wells for them to be of any use.
