This week Kitty & Johnson are joined by the extremely intelligent and gorgeous Dr. Aditi Paul who is a mixed-methods researcher, professor and author based in New York City.

She uses her multi-disciplinary background in computer science and communication studies to examine the impact of using human-centred technologies like social networking sites and online dating services.

Aditi’s research has been published in top academic journals and has been featured in prominent media outlets such as The Washington Post, Women’s Health, The Telegraph UK, Huffington Post and NBCNews.

To kick-off the whole conversation about the hook-up culture Johnson tells an incredibly confusing and hilarious story about his awkward first experience of hooking up when he was 12.

Aditi shares some fascinating data that she has collected through her research. Even the way we talk about “hooking up” (as in engaging in some type of sexual act) differentiates between genders, with female-identifying using much more generalised language and male-identifying using explicit descriptions in conversation.

As part of Aditi’s study she looked at the indicators of sexual assault and how individual’s identified acts within their own personal experiences. She was surprised to find that 1 in 4 males stated that they had been touched inappropriately without consent by an intimate partner and even more surprised to find that the majority of the time this is not being identified as sexual assault.

Johnson speaks about the transition that a lot of us go through from conquest mode to more consciousness around intimacy. In her research with Gen X individuals one of the major differences Aditi found was how much more openly and curiously this generation is exploring their sexual orientation. There are a huge percentage (more than ever before) who are identifying outside of being straight. Their awareness of sexuality and ability to access more information about it is a lot more vast and varied.
