Description

“The 15 that took to the field, the night we won (the championship) in Bristol; every single one of those players had been told that they weren't good enough at one other club. We were a bunch of misfits; all told that we weren't good enough, with a chip on our shoulders, and we were going to play the favourites. You couldn't ask for better. We've now established ourselves in the top four, hopefully top two, teams in England. Now we're just got to establish ourselves as the top team in Europe”

Hello & welcome back.

Hosted & edited by Tracey Duke, produced by Felix Northover and recorded via Zoom during these incredibly challenging times, of Covid-19, we ask the question; what does it take to thrive in a world of both challenge and opportunity and most importantly, how do we build the resilience and leadership skills to get us there?

According to renowned author and rapid transformational therapist Marissa Peer, one of the biggest and most common issues people face, is the belief they are not good enough. It’s a thought that pushes them to self sabotage and to put challenges, obstacles and roadblocks in the way of achieving their optimum potential.

Every so often however, there’ll be someone who’ll break that mould. Who, despite the feeling of not being good enough; despite the rejections, the set backs and the detours in the road, will keep going, keep striving and keep believing. These types, more often than not, will succeed despite it all.

My guest today is Gareth Steenson; a man whose career, in his own words, is built on a foundations of not being good enough, yet whose contribution to his club’s performance has secured his place, in rugby’s hall of fame, as one of the premiership’s greatest ever point scorers.

One of the original Exeter Chiefs, he helped his team to reach the 2016 Premiership Rugby finals at Twickenham and was awarded the prestigious golden boot, as the highest scoring premiership kicker that season.

The following year, in 2017, he started the final at Twickenham, scored two conversions and three penalties, including the winning points, to defeat 2016-17 English Premiership

Today’s conversation deep dives into the life & career of an extraordinary athlete.

We’ll also jump into:

  • lockdown life during Covid-19
  • risk taking
  • staying present
  • the importance of routine
  • positive daily habits

With a special guest appearance from Gareth’s wife; Karen, we also chat about life on the front line as a GP, about maintaining a can do attitude and her concerns on moving forward & easing lockdown in the UK.

As always, thanks so much for listening. Please don’t forget to join us on Sunday evenings at 8pm BST for our Instagram Live Feed.
