Description

This episode of Exeter Real is made possible by our friends at PHAB. Experts in personal hygiene and beauty, this Exeter based, family run, business has been trading for 21 years in the professional hair and beauty sector. When Corona Virus descended on the UK earlier this year, the team responded quickly and effectively; adjusting their business model to address their client's changing needs and to welcome new ones with a range PPE products and specific contactless hand sanitising machines. PHAB is committed to a disciplined buying process that provides both their local, and national customers, with a range of quality, fairly priced, products. You can reach them through the links in the notes; drop them a line and they’ll make sure to look after you. Huge thanks to the entire team at PHAB for their support of the Podcast.

"Standing, singing the national anthem, as the captain of my country, in a final of a tournament, with a packed crowd, whether they were pro or against us, it didn't really matter; it was the realisation of a schoolboy dream. If you have a dream, when you're a young lad, or a young girl, and that dream bears fruition and you live and breathe that moment you've visualized for 15, 20 years; that's powerful. I mean, it's massive".

Hello & welcome back.

Hosted & edited by Tracey Duke, produced by Felix Northover and recorded via Zoom during Covid-19, we ask the question; what does it take to thrive in a world of both challenge and opportunity and most importantly, how do we build the resilience and leadership skills to get us there?

In Season 3 of the podcast, recorded via Zoom, we’re exploring the psychology behind extreme challenge and asking the question; are we all truly capable of achieving extraordinary feats? What is it that enables an ordinary, every day person, to commit to & to complete, an extraordinary, sometimes life-threatening, feat? And, most importantly; how do they do it?

My guest today is Ollie Phillips and, if I’m honest, it’s hard to know where to begin. An adventurer, global speaker and ambassador, his early career began in rugby where he was known as one of the most successful England Rugby Seven’s captains in history and voted “Best Seven’s Player in the World” in 2009.

After a forced early retirement from the game, due to injury, he now specialises in team-building, leadership, culture, resilience and change management.

In the five years that I’ve personally known Ollie, I’ve come to know him as one of life’s true adventurers; a man who is constantly challenging himself to grow and develop his skill sets. Whether he’s racing across America, climbing Everest, running extreme endurance marathons or inspiring the world’s leading organisations to build high performance cultures, Ollie Phillips is a man who rarely stands still.

Today’s conversation explores his very personal battle with mental health following his career ending injury, the mindset behind some of his most famous achievements, pushing through adversity and dealing with change.

As always, thanks so much for listening; it’s always our intent that our work inspires your next steps and that you take from it that which resonates with you.

We hope to see you back next Friday and, in the meantime, don’t forget to join us on Sunday evenings at 8pm BST for our Instagram Live Feed; we’d love to see you there too.
