Description

In this episode, we delve deep into the complexities of relationships with the guidance of a seasoned sex and relationship therapist. My expert guest has years of experience helping couples overcome their challenges and fostering healthier, more fulfilling connections.

Joanne Bagshaw, PhD, LCPC is an award-winning professor of psychology and women’s studies at Montgomery College. She is also an AASECT-certified sex therapist with a private practice in Maryland, and she is the author of "The Feminist Handbook: Practical Tools to Resist Sexism and Dismantle the Patriarchy“ and writes the popular feminist blog, “The Third Wave,” for Psychology Today. Before respecializing as a sex and relationship therapist, Joanne was a trauma therapist, working primarily with rape and sexual assault, intimate partner violence, and adults who were abused as children. Joanne brings her two decades of experience as a therapist to help clients transform their relationships and lead happier and healthier lives.

We start off by discussing the stigma surrounding couples therapy. I first met Joanne back in 2018. I was seeking professional perspective and guidance for a relationship I was in at that time. It was my hope that my previous partner and I would work together with Joanne to better understand each other and deepen our connection. Unfortunately, my previous partner did not want to participate. Many couples feel hesitant or even ashamed to seek professional help, fearing judgment or the misconception that therapy is a last resort. Joanne dismantles these misconceptions, shedding light on the importance of seeking guidance early and embracing the opportunity for growth and healing.

As the conversation continues, we tackle the sensitive topic of trauma. Joanne shares invaluable insights into how past traumas can affect our present relationships, and she offers guidance on how couples can navigate conflict. Joanne sheds light on effective communication strategies, conflict resolution techniques, and the importance of understanding each other's needs and perspectives. Discover how to transform conflicts into opportunities for growth and understanding.

I was personally affected by infidelity, so I was grateful for the opportunity to discuss this topic with my guest. Infidelity can be a devastating blow to any relationship, but Joanne shares her expertise on how couples can work through infidelity. She offers advice on rebuilding trust, fostering forgiveness, and ultimately, finding a way forward, whether that means mending the relationship or finding closure.

Whether you're currently facing these challenges in your relationship or simply seeking to improve or deepen your connection with your partner, this episode provides a wealth of knowledge, hope, and practical advice. Join us as we embark on a journey of healing, growth, and transformation in the realm of love, trauma, conflict, and infidelity.
