Royal Priests E2 - The Mysterious M
Update: 2023-05-09
Description
In this episode, the guys chat about the following questions and ideas:
- 0:30 - In Gen 14 and Heb 7, we read of a mysterious, enigmatic character named Melchizedek. Although Melchizedek is both a king of a city named Salem (a forerunner to Jerusalem) and a priest of God Most High (fitting into the mould of a ‘priest-king’, or a ‘royal priest’), we aren’t told much more about him.
- 1:39 - For the guys, meditating on a character of such narrative weight within a culture obsessed with lineage, it’s almost as if this absence of information was intended. It’s also worth noting that Melchizedek comes from outside what we commonly understand to be the people of God in Israel. Even the name by which he calls YHWH (‘El Elyon’) possibly bears Canaanite (not Israelite) influences. Truly, the kingdom of God is bigger than what we may think, expect or imagine.
- 6:07 - So what does the person of Melchizedek mean for us as the royal priests of God Most High today? For the guys, this character is an embodiment of YHWH’s plan to bless all nations through His chosen people – specifically, through His priests who bless the outsider, who himself/herself becomes a priest, who blesses yet another outsider, and the beat goes on, and on… Now, what is that, if not the story of Jesus, the Great High Priest, who came to proclaim that the kingdom of God belongs to the poor, the sick and the downtrodden?
