Description

In this episode, the guys chat about the following questions and ideas:

  • 0:30 - Psalm 132 is recognised by some as a song that David writes in response to the moment in 2 Sam 6 where he brings the Ark of the Covenant into Jerusalem and, though he was a king rather than a priest, put on the clothes of a high priest and led the procession in worship, song and dancing.
  • 2:34 - For the guys, the words of YHWH and David in Psa 132:8-18 are filled with kingly and priestly language – References to rest and dwelling (which were royal images in ancient times), special clothing, specific mention of the Anointed One, the throne, an abundant provision of food, and more! Like many colourful threads woven together, the tapestry of these images paint a portrait of a coming Anointed One who would unite the roles of king and priest. In particular, the parallel between v16 “Her priests will I clothe with salvation” and v18’s “His enemies I will clothe with shame” stands out, because of how David’s wife Michal, the daughter of Saul, despises David for worshipping with singing and dancing. Michal feels that a king should not worship like that, and she goes on to ‘cloth’ David with ‘shame’ for doing so.
  • 6:43 - So how does the Bible’s portrayal of the David-Michal tension shape us as the royal priesthood of today? For the guys, this is a tale of two kings – Michal, the daughter of king Saul, embodies her late father in valuing the status of kingship above the worship of God. As she watches from her high tower, Michal sees David embarrassing himself by stooping to worship with reckless abandon amongst the common folk. But for king David, this is what needs to be done, and what he wants to do. His people need a priest to lead them in worship. And there is nothing shameful about putting on clothes of a high priest and doing so, because it is YHWH who clothes him with righteousness (v9). This is the kind of king and priest that we are called to be today!
