Hello everyone and welcome to Your English Update, a podcast by EZ Online English.
Your English Update is a podcast where you can keep your English fresh and up to date while you're out there living your busy life. I’m Sahara, your teacher, and today’s lesson is all about using natural responses in English conversations. So to help you better understand, we will also be providing some example scenarios on how to use these expressions.
Ready? Let’s go!
No way!
不可能!
“No way,” is a response that means that you are surprised about an event in another person’s story. You will most often use it with other responses such as oh my god, really, or wow for more emphasis. For example, if your friend told you that they found a dress for a party after they had been shopping for weeks, you could say, “What? Really? No way, let me see!” to express your surprise.
Get outta town!
别唬我!
So this is a sarcastic and joking response that you can to use when you think your friend’s story is so unbelievable that it just could not have happened the way that they’re telling it. The expression literally means you should leave because you are lying. Of course, this is a funny and sarcastic expression. You don’t really mean it. If your friend told you that they had won the lottery, then you could respond saying, “Get outta town!” to express your disbelief and surprise.
Shut the front door!
闭嘴!
Shut the front door is another sarcastic and funny response you can use if you think your friend isn’t telling the truth. It is similar to get outta town, but it is not as strong of an expression of surprise. You are telling your friend jokingly to shut up or stop talking because you can’t believe what they are saying. In this expression, the front door could be associated with the mouth. So if you friend told you that they finally bought a house, then you could say, “Shut the front door!” to express your surprise.

Okay, let’s get back to the expressions.
No he didn’t!
不是吧?
“No he didn’t,” is a response that you can use with a friend if you are surprised about what someone else said or did to your friend. For example, if your friend told you that they ran into a man at the park and that man said their dog was ugly, then you could respond saying, “What?! No, he didn’t!” to show your shock at this man’s actions. You’re saying there is no possible way he would do that!
What a jerk!
真差劲!
“What a…” is a structure that you can use to emphasize a description of someone. It can be used both positively or negatively. Usually, you will use it with an adjective. For example, if someone crashed into your car and then drove away, you could say, “What a jerk!” to describe your surprise or disgust and also emphasize their bad behavior.
Okay, that was a lot of descriptions and explanations coming at you all at once. So, let’s take a minute to review before we go.
