Hello everyone, and welcome back to Your English Update, a podcast by EZOnlineEnglish.
If you’re a student, we have a special episode for you today. Have you ever wondered how to speak appropriately to your professors in English? Well, this week’s lesson has six different expressions for you to use so you can be sure you are speaking respectfully to your professors and teachers. Ready? Let’s go!
When are your office hours?
您的办公时间是怎样的?
Office hours is the term for regular scheduled times the professor will be in their office during the day. Usually a professor will offer these times for students to stop by and ask any questions. Sometimes they will publish their office hours in the syllabus. If you cannot make it to the professors' set office hours, then it is appropriate to email them and ask for a special appointment.
I’d like to discuss my grade with you.
我想和您讨论下我的成绩。
This is an expression you can use to let your professor know you’d like to talk about your current grade. Now, your professor may anticipate that you are going to want to debate or ask them to change your grade. I would suggest not doing these things, and instead be professional. You could ask them for suggestions on how to bring up your grade, talk about mistakes you have made on your assignments, or discuss concepts in the lessons that you’re having trouble with.
When is our paper due?
论文的截止时间是什么时候?
You can use this expression when you’ve forgotten the deadline of your written assignment. In this expression, paper can be used to describe a research paper, an essay, or a long written assignment. A professor may refer you to the syllabus where all of the assignments are explained for you. It’s a good idea to check the syllabus anyway before asking these types of questions.
Alright, we are almost done with the lesson. Let’s take a quick break and rest. If you haven’t already, be sure to check out ezonlineenglish.com. There you will find all of the transcripts and translations from this season of Your English Update. That is the letter E and Z online english dot com.
Is it possible for me to have an extension on this assignment?
这项作业可以延期吗?
If you aren’t able to finish your assignment by the deadline, you could ask for an extension. Depending on the circumstances, the professor may grant you some extra time to finish the assignment. Of course, it is not a good idea to use this expression all the time. But, if you have demonstrated that you are a diligent student, I’m sure the professor may grant you some extra time.
Do you offer extra credit?
您会给额外的学分吗?
If you are not satisfied with your grade, this is an expression you can use to let your professor know you are willing to do extra work to bring up your grade. Extra credit is extra work you can do. Some professors offer it, and some don’t. If they do, then they will offer you an additional assignment to complete.
I wanted to let you know I can’t attend class next week.
我想告诉您我下周不能上课。
This expression is great if you know ahead of time that you will not be able to attend class. Using this kind of expression with your professor shows that you are professional and that you care about the course. If you aren’t able to tell them ahead of time, you can use this expression for after you have missed a class, “I am sorry I wasn’t able to attend class last week.”
Alright, are you ready to review? Let’s see how many expression you remember.
