Hello everyone, and welcome to Your English Update, a podcast by EZOnlineEnglish.

Before we begin, we want to apologize for the delay in uploading lessons! As you can probably hear from my voice, I was sick with COVID last month! But, I am back and healthy now! Ironically this week, we are learning some more useful expressions to use at the doctor for when you need to ask serious questions. Are you ready? Let’s go!

Do I need to be hospitalized?

我需要住院吗?

This is a really important expression to know when a doctor gives you bad news about your health. To be hospitalized is another way of saying that you will be admitted  to the hospital for a period of time. If you are unsure about what the doctor is saying and explaining to you, this direct expression can help you understand how serious the doctor believes your illness is.

How serious is my condition? Is it treatable?

This expression goes really well with knowing if you need to be hospitalized. If you know the level of seriousness about your condition, then this can help with any fear and anxiety that may be developing for you. Additionally, treatable and curable are two different things. Curable means that an illness can be completely healed. Treatable means that the symptoms can be given attention, but it cannot be fully healed.

Is surgery necessary? Is there another treatment option?

必须做手术吗?有没有其他的治疗方式呢?

Knowing your options is really important if you have a serious condition. Perhaps, you don’t want surgery or maybe you want a second opinion from another doctor. This expression is a good way to start that kind of conversation.

How long is the procedure?

手术需要多久?

A medical procedure can refer to any type of test, treatment, or surgery large and small. While explaining how long a procedure will take, the doctor will also probably describe the procedure as being invasive or non-invasive. So, non-invasive–this means that there will be no cutting into the body and it is usually not as serious. An invasive procedure, though, is just the opposite. It usually means some kind of surgery and cutting into the body.

What medication do you recommend?

您推荐什么药?

This is a great way  to start the conversation about medications with the doctor. A more direct way to ask this question would be, “What are you prescribing me?” Regardless of how you ask, it is a good idea though to write down the names of the medications so you can research and translate them if you need to later.
