Hello everyone! And welcome to Your English Update, a podcast by EZOnlineEnglish.
I’m Sahara, your teacher. And as promised, we are back with another lesson about the bank! Have you ever had your card stolen? If you have, you know how big of a headache it can be! I do hope you never have today’s lesson, because all of these expressions are for when you have to call your bank and report an incident! Ready? Let’s go!
I just got a text message about my account, and I am not sure if it was from the bank.
The first incident we are going to talk about today is called phishing. Scammers may send you fake emails or text messages hoping that you will give them private information about your account! If you ever receive a message that you’re unsure about, you can always call the number on the back of your card and use this expression!
I found some charges on my account that I didn’t make. What can I do?
The next incident is for when you find expenses on your account that aren’t yours! You will need to report it to the bank ASAP. A “charge” on your account is another way to say transaction or expense. Use this expression with the open question, “What can I do?” to ask them about possible next steps. Different banks may have different policies for reversing a charge or canceling a card.
I misplaced my card and I need to put a freeze on my account.
If the incident is that you lost your card, then you could call the bank to stop your account from processing any transactions just in case someone else finds it. There are actually two ways to say this. You can tell the bank representative that you need to “put a freeze,” or “put a hold,” on my account until you find your card.
My card was stolen. I need to cancel it and order a new one.
If you’ve had your wallet stolen, then you’ll definitely need to report this incident to your bank! Some banks may offer an online option to report it, but you will most likely need to call them. In that case, you’ll need this expression before someone uses your card to make a purchase!
How long will it take for the new card to get here?
Going off of the last expression, this is an important question to ask! If you have to order a new card, you’ll definitely need to know when it will arrive. When you ask this question, the representative may tell you something like this, “Your card will arrive in two to three business days.” It can be a big inconvenience, so it is better to know a timeframe to plan ahead.
Okay everyone! It’s time for the review! Let’s see if you remembered all of them.
