Hello everyone! Welcome to Your English Update, a podcast by EZ Online English.

It’s time for another quick expression lesson to help keep your English fresh and up to date!  This episode is all about discussing the stock market. We'll help you talk about when your investments do well and maybe when they don’t do so well… Ready? Let’s go!

The market is happy about that.

市场对此很乐观。

Sometimes in English, we personify the market. This means that we talk about it as if it was a person with thoughts and feelings. If we say the market is happy about that, then we mean that generally the market is responding positively and increasing in reference to an event. If the market is responding negatively, you could say that the market is upset or unhappy.

Yesterday, my stocks took a hit because there was a huge plunge.

昨天我的股票因为暴跌受到很大冲击。

“A huge plunge,” describes a sudden dive or fall in value. So in this case, the stocks received damage because the entire market experienced a huge fall in value. If the opposite happened, you could say then that the market skyrocketed which means it quickly increased in value.

The NASDAQ is up 300 points.

纳斯达克指数上涨300点。

Instead of saying increasing or decreasing, you can simply use the words up or down to express the movement of the points in the market. You can especially use this type of expression after the markets have closed for the day. Another common set of words you will hear to express this situation is rise and fall. So if the market closed down 300 points, you could also say “The market fell 300 points today.”

Let’s take a quick break before we continue on with the last expressions. I’m taking my chances with this volatile stock.

我要去现在震荡的股市里碰下运气。

When talking about stocks, volatile is a word that means varying widely in price. It means that the stock is inconsistent. It’s unpredictable and risky. You could make a lot of money, or you could also lose a lot of money. It’s a gamble. If a stock wasn’t risky, then you could say that it has low-volatility. Another way to express this is to use the expression “Blue Chip Stock.” A Blue Chip Stock is a company that has a strong history of being stable and financially sound. Therefore, they are consistent and not risky to invest in.

The news said that the big tech stocks should bottom out this week.

新闻说大型科技股这周会触底反弹。

Bottom out is a phrasal verb that means to end a decreasing trend. If a stock has been falling in value over time, then people will begin to discuss when the decreasing trend will end or bottom out before it starts increasing in price again. If a stock was in an increasing trend, then people may say that it is peaking, peaking out, or reaching the top of it’s crest before falling again.

Alright everyone, this week we learned some advanced expressions! Let’s review them before we go.
