Scripture doesn’t authorize you to slack off and coast into heaven. “Since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles [maybe self-pity] and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us” (Heb 12:1). Your spiritual life is an intentional lifestyle. It requires fidelity. Here is a warning. “But I have this against you, that you left your first love” (Rev 2:1-4). Your personal love for God is your motivation to finish the race spiritually strong. Without some spiritual muscle, you will be crushed by circumstances in life. It’s easy to get discouraged, especially as you get older. But this is when you can be the strongest spiritually, when under pressure. “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness” (2 Cor 12:9-10). Paul discovered that as his human abilities diminished, he relied on God more. Infirmities give you opportunities. You’ll either be bitter about your condition or realize you have more of a privilege to glorify God. Spiritual growth should never end.
