Episode 974: Show Notes

I’m sure you’ve heard “go big or go home” before. But what if the real flex was going small and staying home on purpose? I used to chase more because I thought that more was always better, and it almost completely broke me. Today, I’m going to help you reframe success and show you why dreaming smaller might actually lead to more money, more impact, and a life you can’t wait to wake up to! Ever since I started my business, there has been a cultural obsession with hustling. I want you to ask yourself if always pursuing more is doing more harm than good. You are so capable of crushing so many dreams and doing more than a lot of people could ever even dream of. But just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. If you keep giving so much of yourself away, you will have nothing left.

The Dangers of Hustle Culture

My business was doing well by the time I turned 30, and I was too! I had trained for a 5km run, lost a lot of weight, and was prioritizing my health. But when I felt the pull to do more, grow bigger, and impact more people, every part of my personal wellbeing that I had worked so hard to prioritize started to slip. I didn’t feel like myself. I was stressed, fatigued, and I gained all the weight back. I was drowning in a constant feeling that I wasn’t doing enough, and at the end of the day, I wasn’t actually scaling; I was making the same amount of money! I also felt like giving up my team would be a failure, but cutting down to two full-time employees has done us wonders.

Why Small Doesn’t Equal Insignificant

Small doesn’t mean insignificant; it means intentional! There’s a reason that I call my business a ‘small’ business. My goal is to help people build businesses that fund the lives they have while allowing them to build towards the life that they want. I want people to live more than they work. I don’t want you to think I’m trying to lower the ceiling. Instead, I want to help you build a rock-solid foundation that brings you major stability; something that allows you to do less over time and is less reliant on you. You need to have the freedom to define what ‘enough’ means to you because that will allow you to build the future you want while living your life and having the flexibility to step away if needed. Going small can be the strategy!

You Are Not the Product!

There comes a point when you absolutely need to separate yourself from what you’re selling. You are just a person who works at the company you’re building, and your products need to offer your value in a package that is not you! As you grow, you have to train other people to think like you, sell like you, and coach like you. When a company scales beyond a certain point, the chances of working with the founder become very, very slim, and it can be incredibly disappointing. There is a way to protect your time while staying involved in the client-facing experience of your business. No one is quite as good as you at delivering your product, and being small means you have more direct impact on your clients.

Redefining YOUR American Dream

I recently had a coach look at my website, who said I’m not for people who ‘want it all’ but rather for the people who want to stay small on purpose. I’m wondering what it would look like if your business prioritized your peace and personality over your celebrity status. To me, success looks like slow mornings with breakfast on the deck. I want you to ask yourself what kind of life you’re trying to fund and whether the business model you’re currently pursuing matches that. I bet you are overcomplicating growth because you feel like you should be doing more. You don’t need to do anything to please anyone! The idea of the American Dream is a big lie and is no longer as accessible as it was for the generation before us. Money is still an important part of this equation, but when it’s the motivator, it can often put us on the wrong path altogether.

I want you to reject the version of someone else’s definition of success that you’re moving towards and, instead, find your own definition of ‘enough.’ Playing small is smart, and you have the ability to build something that you can stay in touch with without losing yourself! You get to show up and impact people without losing sight of why you started in the first place. I used to think that all of my worth had to come from my business, and now I know it can come from more than one! You don’t have to let yourself go to have a successful business.

I want you to DM me the smallest goal you’ve ever set, and if you’ve already achieved it, I want to hear why going small was so important to you. I’d love to publish your story in the book I’m writing!
