Episode 18 - Is It Ethical To Eat Meat?

Creeping into the mainstream narrative is the assertion that it is unethical for humans to eat meat. In this podcast I thoroughly disentangle and dismantle this argument perpetuated by the plant based movement. I explore the roots of morality and examine what constitutes morally acceptable behaviour. Are humans and animals "morally equivalent"? Is higher, human, emotional intelligence advantageous? I explore the natural order and the inexorable interplay between life and death. Credit to Sam Harris for his ideas on the fabric of morality.

Primal Pearl - Cholesterol Revisited

The continued vilification of cholesterol is the greatest nutritional myth of our time. Statins were predicted to end heart disease, but this hasn't happened. Do patients suddenly have a heart attack if you stop their statin? No. The evidence for statins is actually surprisingly small. One in a hundred patients have a non fatal heart attack or stroke prevented over a five year period. And remember that this very limited evidence, which is best case scenario, comes from the multi-billion dollar pharmaceutical industry. Pharmacologically driving down a nutrient of critical importance, with statins, doesn't seem to be the solution so clearly other factors are at play. So if cholesterol isn't to blame then what is? Join me as I revisit cholesterol through a slightly different lens. Lets look at the fatty acid composition of atherosclerotic plaque, from recent studies, and explore what actually causes cardiovascular disease.ย ย

Primal Pearl - Blue Zones & Grey Areas

In this mini podcast I discuss the "Blue Zones", regions of the globe where, supposedly, people exhibit a longer than average life expectancy. Can we believe the claims in regards to the abundance of centenarians in these regions and are there, in fact, any common diet or lifestyle habits that we can learn from? Are there any other flourishing global regions that are not acknowledged as Blue Zones? It is often said that people in these regions consume a largely plant-based diet, and it is this that sparks longevity? Is this actually true? Let's find out...ย

Primal Pearl - The Detox Myth

In this podcast I explain why "detox" is a fraudulent money making swindle not rooted in any science. "Detox" is a term that is thrown around very loosely these days, especially within the beauty industry, and this podcast will reveal why, actually, its a term that means next to nothing. Detox does not rid the body of toxins, it simply rids your wallet of hard-earned cash.

In this podcast I explode the link between the growing incidence of autoimmune disease in the western world and dietary & environmental factors. Are powerful immunomodulator and anti-rheumatic drugs really the solution? Once again we explore the crucial role of diet and the the critical interplay between the gut microbiome and the immune system.

Primal Pearl - โ€A to Mโ€ of Stress Management

Nutrition is fundamentally about health and thus my podcast would not be complete without a brief discussion of basic stress management. So today we deviate a little off topic as I take you through my own "A to M" of stress management, essentially a systematic amalgamation of some of the techniques and strategies I utilise in my own life. You'll never be able to fully contol what life throws at you but what you CAN control is how you deal with the blows. Nutrition is about nourishing the mind as well as the body and these additional strategies will serve to enhance your overall health, wellbeing and flourishing. Peace of mind really is the greatest wealth. I hope you find the content useful.

Primal Pearl - Stop Counting Calories!

In this shorter podcast I succinctly explain why calorie counting (for weight loss) is a waste of time. The traditional perspective is that obesity results from a mismatch between calories in and calories out. I explain why this is false and misleading and why losing weight is far more complicated than simply being in a "calorie deficit".

BIOCHEMISTRY ALERT!ย if biochemistry is not your thing then just listen to the intro then skip to 18:40 for the conclusion. Otherwise an absolute minimum of A Level in chemistry and biology will be required to appreciate the content. I discuss the omega 6 polyunsaturated fatty acid linoleic acid, which occurs in all the vegetable seed oils. Linoleic acid is ubiquitous in the typical western diet and found in virtually all processed foods. I discuss the biochemistry underpinning its toxic and inflammatory effects and the pathological implications.
