Are you confused by conflicting advice in regards to what the best cooking oil is? I tackle this frequently asked question head on.
Creeping into the mainstream narrative is the assertion that it is unethical for humans to eat meat. In this podcast I thoroughly disentangle and dismantle this argument perpetuated by the plant based movement. I explore the roots of morality and examine what constitutes morally acceptable behaviour. Are humans and animals "morally equivalent"? Is higher, human, emotional intelligence advantageous? I explore the natural order and the inexorable interplay between life and death. Credit to Sam Harris for his ideas on the fabric of morality.
The continued vilification of cholesterol is the greatest nutritional myth of our time. Statins were predicted to end heart disease, but this hasn't happened. Do patients suddenly have a heart attack if you stop their statin? No. The evidence for statins is actually surprisingly small. One in a hundred patients have a non fatal heart attack or stroke prevented over a five year period. And remember that this very limited evidence, which is best case scenario, comes from the multi-billion dollar pharmaceutical industry. Pharmacologically driving down a nutrient of critical importance, with statins, doesn't seem to be the solution so clearly other factors are at play. So if cholesterol isn't to blame then what is? Join me as I revisit cholesterol through a slightly different lens. Lets look at the fatty acid composition of atherosclerotic plaque, from recent studies, and explore what actually causes cardiovascular disease.
In this Primal Pearl I discuss the highly prevalent bacterium H Pylori and its role in the pathogenesis of gastritis, peptic ulcer disease and cancer. I discuss standard eradication therapy and shine a spotlight on the many issues associated with proton pump inhibitors. Finally, I discuss some alternative methods for tackling this pathogen including application of the bacterium Lactobacillus Reuteri as a novel therapeutic strategy.
In this mini podcast I discuss the "Blue Zones", regions of the globe where, supposedly, people exhibit a longer than average life expectancy. Can we believe the claims in regards to the abundance of centenarians in these regions and are there, in fact, any common diet or lifestyle habits that we can learn from? Are there any other flourishing global regions that are not acknowledged as Blue Zones? It is often said that people in these regions consume a largely plant-based diet, and it is this that sparks longevity? Is this actually true? Let's find out...
In this podcast I explain why "detox" is a fraudulent money making swindle not rooted in any science. "Detox" is a term that is thrown around very loosely these days, especially within the beauty industry, and this podcast will reveal why, actually, its a term that means next to nothing. Detox does not rid the body of toxins, it simply rids your wallet of hard-earned cash.
In this episode you'll discover the critical importance of this underappreciated nutrient. I discuss: Vitamin K1 vs Vitamin K2 Sources of Vitamin K2 Molecular subtypes of Vitamin K2 Biological role of K2 Importance of K2 for bone health Calcium metabolism Vitamin D3 and K2 synergy Importance of K2 for vascular health Vitamin K2 and cancer  MK4 vs Mk7 Recommended dosage
In this episode I discuss why grains are detrimental both to human health and to the environment. Topics I cover: What are grains? How did grains become incorporated into the human diet? Early agricultural practice The ancient Egyptians Ancel Keys and the USDA food pyramid Monocropping and soil degradation  Grains as a carbohydrate source Wheat Germ Agglutinin Gluten Omega 6 in grains Aflatoxin The trouble with soy Fibre and IBS Wheat allergy
In this podcast, which is the sequel to "Environmental Nasties", I discuss 15 more damaging chemicals that are present in everyday products. I explain why they are harmful and recommend better alternatives. I discuss: Ethanolamine Polyethylene glycol Propylene glycol Sodium Laureth Sulphate Carrageenan Phenoxyethanol Oxybenzone Homosalate Octocrylene Octinoxate PFASs Sodium Ferrocyanide Sodium Benzoate Fluoride Aluminium
In this podcast I revisit metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes. I explain why this debilitating modern-day condition is on the rise and almost entirely driven by the typical western diet and lifestyle. I will therefore explain exactly how type 2 diabetes can be put into reverse non-pharmacologically. I also explain the benefits of High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT).
In this podcast I explode the link between the growing incidence of autoimmune disease in the western world and dietary & environmental factors. What's triggering this surge in conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, multiple sclerosis and hypothyroidism? Are powerful immunomodulator and anti-rheumatic drugs really the solution? Once again we explore the crucial role of diet and the the critical interplay between the gut microbiome and the immune system.
In this podcast I'll take you through what I eat during a typical 24h period. I explain the rationale behind all of my food choices and how I build up my personal food pyramid. Some of the topics I discuss along the way: 1. An overview of the prevailing nutritional myths perpetuated by the mainstream narrative. 2. Why a plant-based diet will never rival an animal-based diet. 3. How many essential nutrients are there? 4. A1 vs A2 dairy. 5. What are my thoughts on chicken? 6. The benefits of goats kefir. 7. Avocados 8. Polyphenols: antioxidants or oxidants? 9. NRF2 and natural antioxidants. 10. What do I snack on? 11. Do I "cheat"? 12. Do I drink alcohol? Beer & phytoestrogens. 13. Controlling your food environment and food prep as key strategies for maintaining a healthy and sustainable regime.
In this podcast (which supersedes and elaborates upon "Episode 1") I discuss: đź’Ş What is a supplement? đź’Ş Why take supplements? đź’Ş What are my top 5 supplements (that I personally use for health and performance) đź’Ş Why I no longer supplement with Omega 3 đź’Ş Vitamin D đź’Ş An aside on cholesterol and statins đź’Ş Vitamin K2 (including the roles of K1 vs K2) đź’Ş "Superfoods", liver and organ meat supplements đź’Ş Creatine đź’Ş HMB đź’Ş The mTOR pathway & protein synthesis đź’Ş Are ZMA, DHEA, Boron, Tribulus, Pre-workouts, CLA & Fat Burners worth it or money spinners?
In this podcast I succinctly tackle head on this popularised method for weight loss. Is it really the key to weight loss and longevity or simply another fad that has co-evolved alongside the ever worsening obesity epidemic?
Nutrition is fundamentally about health and thus my podcast would not be complete without a brief discussion of basic stress management. So today we deviate a little off topic as I take you through my own "A to M" of stress management, essentially a systematic amalgamation of some of the techniques and strategies I utilise in my own life. You'll never be able to fully contol what life throws at you but what you CAN control is how you deal with the blows. Nutrition is about nourishing the mind as well as the body and these additional strategies will serve to enhance your overall health, wellbeing and flourishing. Peace of mind really is the greatest wealth. I hope you find the content useful.
In this shorter podcast I succinctly explain why calorie counting (for weight loss) is a waste of time. The traditional perspective is that obesity results from a mismatch between calories in and calories out. I explain why this is false and misleading and why losing weight is far more complicated than simply being in a "calorie deficit".
BIOCHEMISTRY ALERT! if biochemistry is not your thing then just listen to the intro then skip to 18:40 for the conclusion. Otherwise an absolute minimum of A Level in chemistry and biology will be required to appreciate the content. I discuss the omega 6 polyunsaturated fatty acid linoleic acid, which occurs in all the vegetable seed oils. Linoleic acid is ubiquitous in the typical western diet and found in virtually all processed foods. I discuss the biochemistry underpinning its toxic and inflammatory effects and the pathological implications. Topics include ceramide accumulation and how linoleic acid stimulates adipocyte hypertrophy and mitochondrial dysfunction mediated by cardiolipin oxidation and by oxidative breakdown products such as 4-HNE.
In this episode I discuss some common environmental nasties, many of which are endocrine disrupting agents, and steps we can take to minimise our exposure to them. I cover nine nasties: 1. BPA 2. Phthalates 3. Triclosan 4. Parabens 5. Heavy metals 6. PCBs 8. Glyphosate 8. TBT 9. BHT
In this succinct Primal Pearl I discuss artificial sweeteners. Does aspartame cause cancer? Can I still enjoy a can of diet soda as part of a healthy diet? Does sucralose affect the gut microbiome? Do artificial sweeteners affect glucose metabolism? Can they aid weight loss? What's my overall take on them?
In this podcast I deliver an overview of the gut microbiome. What is the microbiome? I discuss the microbial diversity that exists and factors contributing to individual variations. I cover the enormous effect these microbes have on our physiology not only generating critical nutrients but having a profound effect on our hormones, our immune system, our psychological well-being and our metabolic health. I conclude by discussing why urbanisation has wrecked our microbiome, exactly what factors are causing this disruption and how to redress the balance.
