17 Quick Habits To Add To Your Morning Routine For An Amazing Day

In several episodes people have spoken about why a morning routine is just so key, including last week’s episode with Arvin, amongst all the other incredible things he talked about.

We didn’t get a huge amount of time to speak about it with Arvin, so I wanted to take a few minutes and talk to you about the importance of a morning routine, and what you should be doing in your morning routine.

Over the years I have heard loads of people talk about morning routines and two big influencers for me were Tony Robbins and Hal Elrod and his book The Miracle Morning. Which I recommend you get.

Anyway… why have a morning routine?

I talk about this with going to bed as well, but we always talk about getting kids into a routine otherwise they are all over the place, grumpy etc. But then we don’t keep a routine for ourselves. It’s bizarre right?

The Importance Of A Morning Routine

Ultimately it’s about getting you into the right mindset from the start.

How you start your day will set the tone for the rest of the day.

If you start in a rushed manner, then the whole day will feel rushed. And yes I can hear people thinking I don’t have time for a morning routine, I am busy enough as it is.

Well yes it might mean waking up earlier, and yes that might mean going to bed earlier. We talked about sleep a lot last week, the importance of it, and how to improve the quality of your sleep.

But it might also be a very quick morning routine for you.

Set yourself up for success — get into the right mindset, improve your physiology and psychology. Improve your productivity, creativity, energy throughout the day,

Do you need to get up early?

This I think is genuinely up to you and when you work best. I do think success leave clues and when you look at a lot of the successful people they all talk about being up super early.

And there is something quite enjoyable about knowing that you are getting a headstart on everyone else each day.

Quick Habits To Add Into Your Morning Routine For An Amazing Day

1. Exercise:

  • Could be a work out, or just 5 minutes to get the pulse up. Your physiology affects your psychology.

2. Have a glass of water – get your body hydrated asap.

3. Shower – Blast of cold & hot

4-6. Journal – write down:

  • 3 things you are grateful for

Scott Wilhite in his interview talked about the importance of being grateful. It is impossible to be grateful and unhappy at the same time.  Writing 3 things down each day is a proven way of increasing your happiness levels in the long term too.

  • How you progressed your business yesterday

(or if not an entrepreneur – how you progressed in your role) – this holds you accountable to doing things that will grow your business. Just like someone trying to lose weight should keep a food diary as its proven that they lose more weight than those who don’t track their intake. Those who track the work they did that resulted in growth of the business will be more successful than those who don’t.

  • 3 most important things to get done today

Gets your mind focused on the truly important tasks – not the “urgent” tasks. There will ALWAYS be emails to respond to, fires to put out. In order to grow a business you need to focus on the activities that will grow the business.

When I first tell people about this, they sometimes laugh and say, you keep a diary. And I am like HELL YEAH!

Again success leaves clues! Have you watched Chasing Great? The film/documentary about Richie McCaw, perhaps the best rugby player ever, the most successful All Blacks captain. The All Blacks being the most successful sports team/franchise ever!

From the moment he wrote down on a napkin that he wanted to be a Great All Black, when he was just a kid, he kept a journal! Every day, writing down what he did well, how he got better, the things he needed to do to improve, his goals. And wrote down ‘GAB’ on every page! Great All Black. His mind was always focused on becoming a Great All Black!

You may not be a professional rugby player but you should treat your life like its a sport. Train for life!

7-8. Review Of Annual & Monthly Goals:

My goals are written in my journal, so each morning as I open it to start writing I have quick scan through of the yearly and monthly goals. And take note of how I am doing.

9. Read

A book that is going to help you grow. Personal development book, a business book. A non fiction book.

For those that commute to work and were worrying about having to get up even earlier. Lets say you get the train to work, instead of flicking through Facebook and emails get out your journal, review of goals and reading could all be done on the train. If you drive, listen to an audio book.

10. Eat

Fuel yourself with good food in the morning. Give your body the nutrients it needs to allow you to work with energy and focus. If all you can think about is your stomach by 10am, you won’t be focused on work.

11. Meditate
