Something that I think entrepreneurs and business owners are taking more and more seriously is their health.
When people say how can I earn more, do you ever expect the answer ot be… go workout! It turns out.. That should be the answer, or at least part of it.
I think in the past more so, but still now, with entrepreneurs and business owners, our focus is often on doing more in or on the business right. We think, just one more email, just one more post, one more project, one more thing on my to do list.
We think that by spending more time working will result in greater success. And while I do think that if you work harder and longer you will reach goals quicker. But It has to be purposeful work. There’s no point working when your energy levels are so low, that you have been staring at your computer screen for 45 minutes and not written anything. That’s just a waste of time. That’s not productive.. Yes you can claim to your friends that you were working but you achieved nothing in that time.
Even people like Gary Vaynerchuk, the guy who preaches hustle, working all hours of the day, includes starting his day with a workout. He has hired a full time trainer to travel around with him. He now understands the importance of it, and in one interview I heard with him he said he wished he had done it sooner.
If you want to be able to work all hours of the day, productively, then you have to have the energy to do so. Right?
So what are the benefits for entrepreneurs for doing exercise?
You’ll Earn More
Researchers in Finland followed 5,000 male twins for almost thirty years. By tracking which were active and which were sedentary, they determined that regular exercise contributed to 14 to 17 percent higher long-term income levels.
I mean I could stop here right! If you want to increase your income levels by around 15%, you have to work out! Do I need to continue with this podcast!
What’s the secret? It turns out that regular exercise forms the kind of character that wins in the marketplace. According to the researchers, it “make people more persistent in the face of work-related difficulties, and increase their desire to engage in competitive situations.”
But lets look at this further….
Exercise is PROVEN to…
- Improve your focus and alertness
- Increases your energy levels
- Improves brain function
- Improves mood
- Increase creativity – so if you get writer’s block, or get stuck on an idea, take a walk
- Increases your productivity
- Decreases anxiety and stress levels
- Improve your immune system – so you don’t get ill as much.
No wonder people who work out increase their earning potential. If you have more energy, more creative ideas, better focus, get loads more done and you do it in a great mood, and you take less time off from being ill, or trying to work when you are ill… do you think you would earn more, or grow your business quicker? YOU FREAKING BET!
What kind of exercise do you need to do?
Now you may not be in a position to hire a trainer to travel with you wherever you go, so what shoudl you be doing….
In short… a variety. Different forms of exercise have different benefits.
Resistance training – get to the gym and lift those weights, do HiiT training if you want. It can even be body weight exercises. Basically challenge yourself. If you haven’t been in the gym before, or for a while, grab yourself a trainer and get a programme designed for you. Then at least you know exactly what you need to do, and you have a focus to your training.
Cardio – part of me enjoys a run, but I MUCH prefer playing football. Give me 30mins of 6-a-side over a 30minute jog any day of the week. I work harder when playing football there’s no doubt about that too. I have actually only just started playing again and I am loving it.
Yoga – aside from the flexibility, mobility benefits of yoga. One of the huge aspects of yoga is the mindfulness side of it. Yoga is something I am relatively new too, but I love it.
Take a walk – 20mins at lunch – as I said, its proven to improve your creativity and boost your energy. So take 20 minutes and go for a walk. I remember telling a client of ours to do this, he wanted more energy and wanted to lose a few pounds in the process, and he turned back to me and said, Chris…. One 20minute walk isn’t going to make a difference.
And he’s right ONE 20 minute walk in the grand scheme of things wont make a major difference. It will help on that day, but beyond that, limited. But what if you did a 20 minute walk everyday at lunch. You cover 1 mile, over the course of a year thats 365 miles you’ve covered. 365 miles MORE than you would have done sat in your chair. Do you think that would make a difference? You BET!
Do something that you enjoy:
As I said, I love playing football, I look forward to going and playing, like I am excited to go and work my arse off for 30mins in a match right. I do not get that excited about going out for a run.
So join clubs, set up a weekly 5-a-side game with your team or friends, go rock climbing, thats a bloody good workout. Play tennis, squash, badminton. Go swimming.
Work Out With Others:
For me, I like the social sides of things, if I can incorporate a workout with friends then I am in.
Also when it comes to being successful and keeping up with your workout routine, if you know your friend is waiting for you at the gym, you’re going to go so you don’t let them down.
Switch Off
As a business owner you rarely switch off, your brain is always buzzing right. But when you are doing an activity that challenges you, your mind has to focus on the task at hand. It can’t wonder off.
