Bushman Musical Showcase and Interview on Global Linkz Radio
Update: 2015-10-27
Description
From Junior Melody, Major Sardine, to Junior Buckley, young Dwight Duncan emerged as Bushman a critical roots/Dancehall messenger in the 1990's. Since then Bushman has grown as a stellar recording and performing artist. Following years of touring, with appearance on several major music festivals, Bushman under his Burning Bushes Music label is gearing up to release the Conquering Lion album. A socially conscious single from the album, "How You Living" is set to be released November 2, 2015 on the anniversary of the Coronation of His Imperial Majesty Halie Selassie I & Her Imperial Majesty Empress Menen.
During the premier of his latest single "How You Living" on Global Linkz Radio, Bushman acknowledges that not everyone is quickly drawn to socially conscious music such as How You Living. As such, the artist shared this message: "...for all the people who love music, for all his fans and all those who are not even Bushman's fans. For me this is not about where the money is making, or the kind of lyrics that its taking, or people are listening, its about what I stand for and about my mission which I want to accomplish. And for me, If I have the voice to speak for a hundred million people, why should I do it derogatorily, or why should I speak of the car and the shoes and the house? Better things to speak of."
After the release of Conquering Lion, Bushman's futuristic goal is to produce young emerging artists on Burning Bushes Music Label The singer has made it clear that he will continue to record works of his own beyond producing others. As advocate for the legalization of Marijuana and following the Jamaican Government amended Dangerous Drug Act pertinent to he decriminalization of Marijuana Bushman is scheduled to perform in Jamaica at HIGH TIMES 2015 Jamaican World Cannabis Cup on November 13, 2015 in Negril. This will be the first Cannabis Cup held in Jamaica. Bushman is no stranger to High Times Cannabis Cup event as he was a past judge on the international event which was held in Holland.
Early Years
Born Dwight Marvin Duncan in St. Thomas, Jamaica in 1973. Duncan was active in church choirs and as a teen he became a selector for the Black Star Line sound system under the name Junior Melody (Duncan also occasionally billed himself as Major Sardine and Junior Buckley). Relocating to Kingston hoping to break into the Jamaican music scene there, Duncan met famed producers Steelie and Cleevie in 1995, who were impressed with his warm baritone singing voice, and quickly recorded him on "Grow Your Natty" at Studio 2000, which was followed by the hit "Call The Hearse". With talks of an album Steely wished to change the name Junior Melody to Bushman. Initially Duncan was unhappy with this name, he thought it somehow derogatory to him coming from the country, until he researched the name only to discover that 'Bushman' was an African name for 'Medicine Man'. "Call The Hearse" became a big hit in Jamaica, and was followed by "Rude Boy Life" and his debut album, Nyah Man Chant (1997). Nyah Man Chant was described in The Rough Guide to Reggae(p.369) "as good an example of modern cultural singing as you could hope to find." Bushman worked with producer King Jammy (Lloyd James) for his next two albums, Total Commitment (1999) and Higher Ground(2001).
A Better Place (2001) Bushman exclaimed was an injustice to his ardent fans as the album was renamed and released three times as A Better Place in 2002 and My Meditation in 2003 with the addition of a couple songs. This was not of his doing. Since then he has parted ways with the distribution company. Signs, incorporating some R&B and pop touches, was the next album released in 2004. Get It In Your Mind was released in 2008 on Bushman's Burning Bushes Label. As Peter Tosh was a great influence to Bushman, Bushman Sings The Bush Doctor (2011) a tribute to Peter Tosh was released.
Throughout his career Bushman has remained committed to culturally conscious roots material, adamantly resisting the slacker side of the contemporary Jamaican Dancehall milieu. He has traveled extensively through out Europe, USA, Africa and other regions spreading his musical message. His team is currently organizing a USA Tour for later in 2015/early 2016.
