Description

This episode highlights some of the amazing aspects of how Jesus has dealt with the scourge of sin and death, and leads us in victory against the enemy. The main point for us is not identifying with David as someone with faith, as attractive as that seems. We can actually miss the bigger picture, the wider view if we zoom in on this and jump straight to applying the biblical text. Of primary importance is where this story fits in as part of God’s overall plan of redemption. That God raised up David points us to our Lord and Christ (the Anointed One), the Messiah who was victorious over sin and death by his own sacrificial death on the cross. Just as the onlooking soldiers gripped with fear saw David’s courageous actions then followed him, so too the Church follows him in victory. The soldiers needed someone to deliver and lead them, a new type of leader who could pull them all together in a way none of the judges or deliverers could in times past – one who could usher in a victorious kingdom. Like the soldiers, we need a Saviour to lead us. Once we best identify how the story sheds light on the human condition as well as God’s grace, we can move more safely to application today.

As with last week, at the very end there are some questions for reflection.
