Chapter 6: Restraining Anger
Description
David had every right to be angry about the way he had been treated by Saul. More than once God gave him a clear opportunity to take revenge and kill him. David would not harm the Lord’s anointed, King Saul. But how would he respond when someone far less important offended him? Would he be rash like Saul had been? Would he restrain himself like he done with Saul, refusing the kill the Lord’s anointed, the present king? Saul, King of Israel was one thing, but a stupid, rich and unprotected farmer?
As we pick up the story, we are told that the elderly prophet Samuel had died. Samuel had been highly regarded by the people, but David had known him personally. It would have been a big blow for him. The person who best understood his destiny, the man who had picked him out and anointed him as the future king, was dead. A spiritual giant in the land and personal mentor to David…gone. David moved further away in the desert to put greater distance between himself and Saul. The Scripture doesn’t record if David got to the funeral, but it is unlikely given the circumstances. He would have needed to be in disguise since Saul was out to kill him. So David likely didn’t get to say a final goodbye in the normal manner to an important mentor. Perhaps you can relate.
