Daily Zohar 4984

Holy Zohar text. Daily Zohar -4984

Zohar Lech Lacha

Continued from previous DZ

#187

And therefore, at the time when Israel dwelt in the Land and performed the service of the Holy One, blessed be He, the Shechinah was modest among them and did not go out from the house to the outside openly. And for this reason, all the prophets who were at that time, that is, at the time when the Temple stood, did not receive prophecy outside her place, that is, outside the Land of Israel, as we have said. And for this reason, Jonah fled outside the holy Land, so that prophecy would not be revealed upon him, and he would not be obligated to go on the mission of the Holy One, blessed be He.

Notes:

The Shechinah remained in the Land during Israel’s service, limiting prophecy to it, prompting Jonah’s flight to avoid a divine mission, unlike Abraham’s faithful journey.

#188

And if you say: Behold, we see that the Shechinah was revealed in Babylon to Ezekiel, which is outside the Holy Land. Behold, we have explained that it is written: “הָיֹה הָיָה”—”It was, it was” (Ezekiel 1:1). That it was then, something that had not been before, from the day the Temple was built. And that prophecy was for that hour, to comfort Israel, as it is written below.

Notes:

This Zohar passage addresses the apparent exception of the Shechinah’s revelation to Ezekiel in Babylon, outside the Land of Israel. The phrase “הָיֹה הָיָה” (Ezekiel 1:1) indicates a unique, temporary prophecy to comfort Israel in exile, unlike the norm when the Temple stood (#187), where the Shechinah remained in the Land.

Main Point: The Shechinah’s revelation to Ezekiel in Babylon (הָיֹה הָיָה) was a unique, temporary act to comfort Israel, distinct from her usual confinement to the Land when the Temple stood.

#189

And it is written about the river Kevar (כבר), which means a river that already existed from the day the world was created, and the Shechinah was always revealed upon it. That is, before the Temple was built, as it is written: “וְנָהָר יוֹצֵא מֵעֵדֶן לְהַשְׁקוֹת אֶת הַגָּן וּמִשָּׁם יִפָּרֵד וְהָיָה לְאַרְבָּעָה רָאשִׁים”, “And a river went out from Eden to water the garden, and from there it was divided and became four heads” (Genesis 2:10 ). And this river Kevar is one of those four rivers. The meaning is: The garden is the secret of the Shechinah, from which the river that goes out from Eden, which is the secret of Chokhmah, flows, and it became four rivers. Therefore, the Shechinah was revealed upon these four rivers before the Temple was built.

Notes:

The Shechinah was revealed on the river Kevar, one of Eden’s four rivers (וְנָהָר יוֹצֵא), before the Temple, channeling Chokhmah to the world, unlike her later confinement to the Land.
