Come and see: At the hour when Isaac said to Esau: “וְצֵא הַשָּׂדֶה וְצוּדָה לִּי צָיִדָה”, “Go out to the field and hunt game for me” (Genesis 27:3), with ה Hei, for he should have said ציד tzayid without Hei, and they explained it. And Esau went out to hunt game so that he would be blessed by Isaac, who said to him: “וַאֲבָרֶכְכָה לִפְנֵי יְהוָה”, “And I will bless you before YHVH” (Genesis 27:7). And if he had said וַאֲבָרֶכְכָה—”And I will bless you” and no more, it would have been good. Since he said to him, “before YHVH,” at that time, the Throne of Glory of the Holy One, blessed be He, trembled. And it said, “What is this?” Behold, the serpent has come out from these curses, and Jacob will remain in them.

Notes:

This Zohar passage interprets וְצֵא הַשָּׂדֶה and וַאֲבָרֶכְכָה לִפְנֵי יְהוָה (Genesis 27:3, 27:7). Isaac’s addition of Hei in tzayidah and “before YHVH” in the blessing stirred the Throne of Glory, fearing Esau’s blessing would empower the serpent (the Snake, evil inclination, yetzer hara), leaving Jacob in curses. This highlights the power of words in blessing, with Isaac’s intent to elevate Esau threatening Jacob’s spiritual inheritance.

At that time, Michael appeared and came before Jacob, and with him the Shekhinah. And Isaac knew this and saw the Garden of Eden with Jacob, and blessed him. And when Esau entered, Gehinnom entered with him. And therefore, “וַיֶּחֱרַד יִצְחָק חֲרָדָה גְדוֹלָה עַד מְאֹד”, “And Isaac trembled a very great trembling” (Genesis 27:33 ). For he had thought before that Esau was not from that side. And therefore, he opened and said: “וַאֲבָרֶכְכֵהוּ גַּם בָּרוּךְ יִהְיֶה”, “And I will bless him—yes, he will be blessed” (Genesis 27:33 ).

Notes:

Michael and the Shekhinah with Jacob revealed the Garden of Eden, while Esau brought Gehinnom, causing Isaac’s great trembling. Realizing Jacob’s holiness, Isaac affirmed his blessing. This continues #139’s theme of blessing’s power, with divine presence determining spiritual outcome.
