Professor Sauerbruch was the leading German surgeon in the early 20th century. One of his special achievements was a revolutionary surgical technique that enabled procedures in the chest area. The groundbreaking method from Wuppertal still saves many lives today.
The actor Horst Tappert, born in Wuppertal, became world-famous in the title role of the crime series "Derrick".
The teacher Carl Fuhlrott discovered the Neanderthal in the neighbouring town of Mettmann in 1856.
At the head of the celebrities from Wuppertal is undisputedly the late Federal President Johannes Rau.
Another front runner in matters of fame would be the womens-magazine “Emma” founder and feminist Alice Schwarzer.
The designer Gottlob Espenlaub should also be mentioned. The airplane pioneer introduced lightweight construction and streamline shapes to the automotive industry.
