"The Nutcracker" becomes a clichéd to-do list that brings Michael closer to Gretchen, who is drawn to the visitor; Justice needs help dealing with his first love, and parental guidance; and there's a breakup-and-reconciliation finale to lighten the mood as Michael begins to understand his true connection to the boys, who need someone stable in their lives. Surprises are not welcome in this film, but Gordon's main objective is mood, rethinking old filmmaking habits from the time of George Washington, hoping to capture the wild spirit of youth during the magic hour, if possible. "The Nutcracker" wants to evoke big emotions, but the emotional response to a clichéd script is muted by the same atmosphere. Stiller is as animated as ever, which is great, and the young actors exude a raw energy that helps convey the oppressive situation, but it's hard to get invested in this movie, as so much of it has been portrayed better before.
