Description

I'm a Community Advocate for Las Virgenes Unified School District Parents. I’ve been in the private sector for 30 years, including 15 years as a small business owner & a mentor to hundreds. I have 3 kids in the district, & I have been involved in the LVUSD community for 7 years now, including a recent LVUSD Governing School Board Member run; I received 7000+ votes. I look forward to serving the needs of any Parent or taxpayer who needs my help.

Sent to be by a community member who found this on another forum. I am still not certain how I want to vote, but this has been the most accurate description of Measure S I’ve seen and this is why I am sharing it. ——————- ALONG WITH MANY OTHER MEMBERS OF THE CALABASAS COMMUNITY, I AM VOTING NO ON MEASURE S (LVUSD Schools Measure) - HERE IS WHY: First and tragically, subject to proper controls and responsible spending, I absolutely support most of what Measure S is trying to accomplish. However, I look at this from two lenses. 1) as a parent with a child in LVUSD and 2) as a tax over-paying member of the Calabasas community. We can all agree we need to update roofing, HVAC systems, plumbing, roofing, safety, security, etc... The real question here is that, BASED ON MEASURE S MARKETING AND PROPAGANDA, THE COMMUNITY & VOTERS ARE FUNDAMENTALLY BEING MISLEAD AS TO WHAT MEASURE S MONEY IS REALLY BEING SPENT ON. In most of the propaganda received, there are inspiring pictures of students with microscopes and lab equipment working diligently on their STEM projects with companion language such as “Provide modern labs,” “support high-quality instruction in math, science, engineering, technology, …”. This clearly implies to any average person that the district is intending to provide and/or update State-of-the-Art STEM Facilities at all campuses. In fact, when you look at the 25 items on the Measure S Project List ( https://www.lvusd.org/site/default.aspx?PageType=3&DomainID=4&ModuleInstanceID=24&ViewID=6446EE88-D30C-497E-9316-3F8874B3E108&RenderLoc=0&FlexDataID=11596&PageID=1) for Calabasas High School, over 1/3 of the projects (9 of the 25) are sports-related, and NONE are related to "Math, Science, Engineering, Technology. " all while there is NO MENTION OF ANY STEM RELATED FACILITIES. The sports facilities at CHS and AHS include but are not limited to the following: • Stadium bleacher upgrades • Field turf and track replacement • Improve natural field surfaces • Competition pool, including bleachers, shade, and changing areas (Both CHS and AHS) • Practice gym (2nd Gym) • LED for Stadium Lighting • Installation of restrooms at ballfields • Tennis Court Bleachers • Laser Leveling and resurfacing of baseball and softball fields • Sports Medicine CTE: Athletic Training Facility • Gymnasium Shower & Locker Facilities There appears to be a disproportionate focus on the improvement and construction of a multitude of sports facilities but NO STEM facilities, which is what they are promoting to secure votes in Measure S. The layman's term for this is “Bait and Switch.” Some lawyers might use the term “Fraud at the Inducement.” How do we, as a community, stand by this apparent lack of integrity on the part of the district and campaign. Why not be truthful and forthright with what they are actually spending the money on? Is that not what we teach our kids? Instead, some might say the district is being incredibly duplicitous, which is certainly not a trait I want for my child’s educators. The challenge is that much of Measure S is good. So, while I definitely support many elements (roofing, HVAC, safety, etc...), I cannot in good conscience support the incredibly misleading tactics the district and campaign seem to be utilizing to sell this to our community. After all, this is a colossal measure that will saddle the community with $340 Million Dollars of BRAND NEW DEBT, despite the other misleading propaganda that there is “NOT ONE DIME” of additional taxes. To be clear, these are new taxes. The old bond measure is ending, so if there was no Measure S, our taxes would meaningfully drop. This Measure will add those taxes back. I personally support voting NO on this Measure. Then next election, support a brand new measure that will allow the entire community to determine where our priorities lie and, more importantly, ensure transparency in the campaign. For me, as for many parents, while I would love to have great sports
Why is my Facebook campaign going haywire?   For anyone concerned about the rude comments here, a group of politically radical folks in Calabasas (some folks who do not even live in our District) was employed to discredit who I am to keep Lesli Stein & Angela Cutbill in office. They hate me (and my base of supporters) and Dallas Lawrence because he stands up to the school board's quorum. You can figure out who these folks are just by their rude words. They are taking partial truths and turning them into whatever they want you to think about me. They are here to ensure their preferred candidates stay in office, so they continue to run the District however they like. I know people will believe their lies, and there is nothing I can do about that, but for those who find hope in what I have to say and want someone like me to serve their interests on the school board, I am the right person for the job. I will protect everyone equally, including all taxpayers in the District, whether you have kids enrolled in school or not, because your voice deserves to be heard by the District. Radicals will never silence me; I will be as transparent as the law allows me to be. I am ready, willing, and able! Please feel free to listen to my podcast episodes, or you can find out more about my platform. Thanks for reading! Did the LVUSD Curriculum Council Violate The Brown Act? On September 24th I raised concerns over the LVUSD Curriculum Council not voting on the minutes of their last meeting.  During the Curriculum meeting on Wednesday, 10/12/22, a Civilian Oversight Member, Mr. Robkin aired similar concerns about the minutes not being voted on and how the minutes did not match his recollection.  Two LVUSD Board Members were in attendance, Ms. Linda Menges, Current Board President, and Ms. Lesli Stein, former board President and incumbent candidate for the 2022 LVUSD School Board election.  Neither Menges nor Stein knew the answer to Mr. Robkin's question, as to whether or not the Curriculum Council was in compliance with the Brown Act.  How could they not know the most simple part of the Robert Rules of Order?  You always vote on the minutes from the last meeting!   Josh Alpert for LVUSD School Board 2022 LVUSD School Board Member Dallas Lawrence Lesli Stein for re-election LVUSD School Board 2022 Re-Elect Angela Cutbill - LVUSD School Board Las Virgenes Unified School District
Who is Josh Alpert for LVUSD School Board 2022? I am an open-minded forty-six-year-old husband and father of six, including two in the district since 2015. Born and raised in NYC, I am a bi-coastal small business owner and a business consultant to hundreds of small business owners. My campaign touches on several pressing issues, including school safety, mental health services, financial responsibility, accountability & transparency. I am a school safety advocate, very passionate about protecting students from the threat of school shooters.  I want security fences surrounding all LVUSD schools.  I am open to arming willing and capable LVUSD employees as the first line of defense to protect our children because our children are sitting ducks. I have been actively raising awareness in the district regarding the dangers of Fentanyl exposure and consumption. I'm thrilled that LVUSD retained a security firm to deal with the drug problems on campus. I would like to see LVUSD hire more mental health counselors to better cope with mental health crises because the district is drastically understaffed, and kids will die. I believe LVUSD schools are excellent regarding teachers, academics, and programs. Still, I think the 94% graduation rate constitutes a wider variety of vocational programs to prevent the 6% of high school students who do not graduate from slipping through the cracks. I have been hyper-critical of the district for financial mismanagement because the district has millions of dollars per year in net operating losses.  As a businessman, I am concerned that the district is on an unsustainable path to insolvency. The budget in the future is dire, considering the pension obligations plus declining enrollment. Everyone deserves to have their voice heard.   I'll always listen to recommendations from the community and will always vote with the best interest of the community in my mind, which includes all taxpayers, whether you have children currently enrolled in the district or not. There are many community members and LVUSD employees with complaints inadequately addressed by the district. The school board is not doing enough to hold the district accountable; I can change that.  I also feel the school board members lack transparency when addressing the community's concerns; I will be as transparent as the law allows. Ninety percent of LVUSD school board meetings have nothing to do with the responsibilities of a school board member.  Eighty percent of LVUSD board members don’t know how to run a compliant board meeting, but I do. I had an exchange with the contributor from The Acorn Newspaper who did the hit piece on me.  Stephanie Bertholdo claims "The article was completely fair, not negative, was not a commentary (opinion piece) and 100% based on your answers. I included as much information that you provided and that space allowed."  While some of this is true, there were mentions of other items in her hit piece which were not part of the interview, therefore some of her answers came from independent research. The LVUSD District is trying to sell us a tax increase, without telling us there will be a tax increase. We will have a tax reduction when Measure G expires, and if Measure S does not pass. The District is asking us to agree to a new tax increase to fund urgent repairs and upgrades for the LVUSD district. Does Calabasas HS really need a new pool?  Is this the right time to spend our hard-earned money on such? I cannot trust anything this District tells us, because they lack transparency.   How should you vote?  For me it is "maybe", but when you go to vote on 11/8/22, please use your best judgment.   Las Virgenes Unified School District Josh Alpert for LVUSD School Board Dallas Lawrence Kate Vadehra Lesli Stein Linda Menges Angela Cutbill The Acorn Newspaper
6% of LVUSD Students Do Not Graduate; Expanding Vocational Programs Can Fix It I know the majority of our students turn out okay, but I am very concerned for the 6% who do not graduate. The district offers vocational programs, but I would like to see them expand the vocational programs to provide more options for those students who do not want to stay in school or waste their time at a junior college. Our economy is suffering tremendously, it would be nice to see LVUSD teach them electrical, plumbing, pest control, carpentry, etc. It would increase the graduation rate and help the 6% make something more of their lives than a cashier at a fast food restaurant. HS education is essential. When I went to HS, we had mainstream studies and a wide variety of vocational programs to take as electives. I made a very successful life from a self-study course on bookkeeping. A straightforward textbook and I am living in the same community as people with the highest degrees in the land. I could have easily slipped through the cracks, but they had options for me to choose from, and I made the most of it. I do not see a reason to go to a community college to learn a vocational skill because you are wasting time on core studies, which are irrelevant to learning a vocational skill. Las Virgenes Unified School District  Dallas Lawrence Kate Vadehra Lesli Stein Linda Menges Angela Cutbill Josh Alpert for LVUSD School Board 2022 From The LVUSD Website: CTE classes offer students a chance to explore and experience a career field. Students will have the opportunity to learn job skills at an actual job site or in a simulated work environment. Career areas such as Sports Medicine, Business & Entrepreneurship, Culinary Arts, Careers in Education, Film & Video Production, and Technical Theater are among the selections described in the following sections from which students may choose.
Are your children aware of how lethal exposure to counterfeit Fentanyl is? Several Los Angeles area teenagers have overdosed on counterfeit Fentanyl; some have even died, including one 15-year-old high school student in the Woodland Hills / Canoga Park area. There are rumors that rainbow-colored Fentanyl will be handed out to kids around Halloween.  Please make your children aware of how dangerous it is to be exposed to counterfeit Fentanyl.  It is so hazardous that many students and law enforcement officers have overdosed from exposure to it.   The LVUSD District recently approved a measure to stock Narcan in all LVUSD schools to reverse the effects of any students on campus who have symptoms of opioid overdose.   Still, the District should be doing more to bring awareness to our community's crisis, the same way they make sure we know every detail about the Football team's schedule and progress.   Las Virgenes Unified School District Naloxone Lesli Stein Dallas Lawrence Angela Cutbill Kate Vadehra Linda Menges
The LVUSD District Filed A Lawsuit; Without Proof That the LVUSD Governing Board of Directors Approved Moving Forward With The Lawsuit. Based on my research, LVUSD Superintendent Dan Stepenoksy signed off on a lawsuit where LVUSD is suing JUUL. Still, LVUSD employees Kelly Beder and Ryan Gleason claim the district has no documentation supporting that the Superintendent moved forward with the LVUSD Governing Board of Education's approval.   Suppose the District office is comfortable enough not to involve the LVUSD Board of Governors in a decision to move forward with a frivolous lawsuit. In that case, it makes you wonder what else they could be doing that is unethical.  Should the Superintendent be able to file a lawsuit without the LVUSD Governing School Board's approval? JUUL E-Cigarettes are in the hands of minors everywhere, and ambulance-chasing attorneys are getting school districts to join in their frivolous lawsuits, shifting blame to JUUL for children vaping based on claims that JUUL's marketing targets minors through deceptive advertising and fun colors.     Why is JUUL being targeted?  Why aren't the District's efforts being concentrated on local law enforcement, as in cracking down on stores that sell vapes to minors, and adults who buy vapes for children?  This is the real problem, not that JUUL makes vapes for adults, and they wind up in children's hands.   The District is just looking for free money, and filing frivolous lawsuits is not the way they should "fundraise" for the District.   Las Virgenes Unified School District Josh Alpert for LVUSD School Board 2022 Kate Vadehra Dallas Lawrence Lesli Stein Angela Cutbill Linda Menges Calabasas High School HS Agoura High School HS Lindero Canyon Middle School AC Stelle Middle School AE Wright Middle School Calabasas Woodland Hills Bell Canyon West Hills Agoura Hills Malibu Westlake Village
Several LVUSD parents have reached out to me regarding their children's problems with learning or behavior in the Las Virgenes Unified School District.  Many of these parents have reached out to counselors and are not finding the necessary answers.  All parents must be aware of their educational rights under the California Department of Education's Individuals with Disabilities Act because they are procedural safeguards.   Please note the District will fight you on these services, and it is your job to fight back to ensure your child receives the benefits they are entitled to.  If your efforts are not productive, I highly recommend you reach out to a special education advocate or an attorney.  In my personal experience, the advocate was very effective and far cheaper than an attorney. Still, I strongly suggest you utilize the resources that will be most effective for your unique situation.    For more information on your child's educational rights, please reference the California Department of Education's website.  https://www.cde.ca.gov/sp/se/qa/pssummary.asp
For the first LVUSD Board meeting in September of 2022, I went to the website to find out how to review the documents for the agenda but could not find them.  All I could find was a note that said the records were available for inspection at the district.  I emailed Kelly Beder & Ryan Gleason on Monday to request the documents, and I followed up again on Tuesday with Ryan Gleason, Kelly Beder, Maria Bergstrom, and Dan Stepenosky.  They ignored me, so I contacted a board member who requested the documents on my behalf, but the district still did not get them to me on time.  The district administration finally sent them on Wednesday, the day after the meeting, and the board member I reached out to showed me how to find the documents on the LVUSD website on Wednesday.  I filed a complaint with Board President Linda Menges because the district did not get back to me on time, and on day 9, I had to remind her to get back to me.  Menges responded that she mailed a letter to my house and attached a copy of the letter to the email.  Menges said the district was confused with my request and thought they had ten days to fulfill it.  Menges denied my request to make the documents available a week in advance.  These documents are buried on the website, and there is not enough time between Friday afternoon and Tuesday afternoon to review all records, so we can rally the community to contact board members to explain how we want them to vote.  LVUSD needs to be more transparent with their records; instead of saying they are available at the district, there should be a clear link that says "CLICK HERE FOR ALL DOCUMENTS about THE NEXT BOARD MEETING," and instead of 72 hours in advance, we need a whole week.  When I am elected, in the interest of transparency and accountability, I will lobby to provide the documents one week in advance.   Las Virgenes Unified School District Josh Alpert for LVUSD School Board 2022
On May 3rd, 2022, I attended an LVUSD board meeting.  I called on the school board to open an independent investigation into very serious harassment allegations against LVUSD Superintendent, Dan Stepenoksy.  And, if their investigation was conclusive, I was expecting them to ask for the resignation of Dan Stepenosky.  To my dismay, the LVUSD School Board did absolutely nothing, which is the exact opposite of what they should have done. About a month ago I met a parent at Willow; she reached out to me the following morning. She wanted to know my perspective on transgender students receiving assistance to transition by LVUSD staff without the parent's knowledge. First off, my opinion on transitioning is, to each, their own. It is none of my business what anyone wants to do to themselves, and vice versa. My problem is that the District thinks it is okay to attend workshops to learn how to help students transition without the parent's knowledge, and this is where I draw the line. Suppose a student with gender dysphoria confides in a teacher. In that case, the teacher should immediately refer the child to speak to a school counselor because a school counselor is accredited to deal with these types of situations, not the teacher. Once the school counselor handles it, they must notify the parents immediately because gender transitioning is a personal situation between the student, the parents, and their family doctor. The school should have nothing to do with it beyond helping the student break the news to their family. Suppose the student is against the school counselor involving the parents because the student fears their safety. In that case, the counselor should notify the police immediately because that is what a school counselor is supposed to do when there is a threat to the student's safety. The teachers, the counselors, and the administration should not be involved in anything else. I hope that LVUSD stops playing with people's children because they are not your kids. The kids do not belong to the schools, nor do they belong to the community. The sooner we can all agree upon this and have everyone mind their business, the better off we will be. Some LVUSD School Board Members Do Not Unequivocally Support or Defend The Constitution of The United States! Linda Menges, Angela Cutbill, and Lesli Stein have all violated my Constitutional rights by hindering my freedom of speech on the internet.   https://www.aclu.org/news/free-speech/court-rules-public-officials-cant-block-critics-facebook Josh Alpert for LVUSD School Board 2022 Las Virgenes Unified School District
LVUSD School Board Member Lesli Stein Disallowed Dallas Lawrence from Abstaining his Vote  On January 11, 2022, during a Las Virgenes Unified School Board meeting, Dallas Lawrence tried to abstain from a vote and was not allowed by Lesli Stein, who quoted the Robert Rules of Order.  I have reviewed the Robert Rules of Order, and Dallas was well within his rights to abstain from the vote.  Lesli Stein did not understand what she was reading and made a false claim, essentially pressuring Dallas Lawrence into voting in fear of further retaliation against him.  Ms. Stein has been on the board for about 13 years; she has served as the Board President, but there are times when she has abstained from votes and has no idea how to run a meeting.   Lesli Stein, Kate Vadehra, Angela Cutbill, Linda Menges, Dallas Lawrence.
Did you know that LVUSD school board member Dallas Lawrence was the only LVUSD Board member pushing for our children to return to school during the Covid lockdowns? And the LVUSD board removed him from all committees to punish him for doing his job, as in standing up for the community, AKA We the People, and for the health and wellness of his children.   Las Virgenes Unified School District members Linda Menges, Angela Cutbill, Lesli Stein, Kate Vadehra, and Dallas Lawrence. Just like everywhere else in the nation, narcotics are rampant at Calabasas High School and Agoura High School, including but not limited to the football and baseball teams.   Students and student-athletes come to school drunk and high on all different types of illegal narcotics, including but not limited to Marijuana, Acid, and Shrooms.  Some coaches, like Coach Chev of Agoura Charger Baseball, are aware of the substance abuse by athletes and have gone out of their way to keep the kids out of trouble by alerting them when drug-sniffing dogs are coming to the school.  Although the district has not publicized any of this information, they recently announced that they have hired 3 retired law enforcement officers for a one-year trial. Still, only because they had use-it or lose-it funds left from Measure G, or else they would not have entertained this fantastic idea.  Hopefully, when this trial contract expires, they’ll find the funds to continue with these officers and maybe even beef up the staff. Taken from the LVUSD School Board Meeting on Tuesday, 8/30/2022. Las Virgenes Unified School District spent over one million dollars on fencing this past summer and did not get the whole district done; just 4 schools and only patching their existing fencing. When the assistant superintendent mentioned the expense, a board member seemed confused because the board member thought the total district-wide fencing cost was one million dollars, not just this past summer's expense. Two board members were absent, and the other two did not provide their perspectives, including the Board President. What is the board for if there is only one board member holding the district accountable?
On 8/31/22, Las Virgenes Unified School District Governing Board Member Lesli Stein of 13 years, went to the Agoura High School Parent Faculty Club meeting.  As reported back to me, Ms. Stein spoke in front of the PFC and told everyone that a "very dangerous" candidate was running for the LVUSD School Board and that he wanted to burn books.  Ms. Stein also mentioned that she knows she is not allowed to talk about this (election matters), so she will not mention any names but urged everyone to vote for all the incumbents in seats 2, 3 & 4. Several concerned parents contacted me to let me know what Ms. Stein said and told me that the recording secretary from the PFC recorded the entire meeting.  I requested a copy of the recording, but the PFC refused to give it to me based on a technicality in how I asked for it.  The PFC President could have simply provided the recording in the interest of transparency but, unfortunately, decided to make this a pending legal matter. I have consulted an attorney who guided me on how to re-request the recording, and now I am waiting for the response from the Agoura High School Parent Faculty Club President to provide me with this information.   I have also reached out to a local elected leader for help in obtaining this recording. Why would the Agoura High School Parent Faculty Club protect an elected official?  It is illegal for a 501c3 to endorse a candidate, and while the AHS PFC did not publicly support Ms. Stein, protecting Ms. Stein, an elected official seeking to be re-elected, is unethical and not in the public's best interest. http://leslistein.com/
Did you know that suicide is the leading cause of death in teenagers, and research shows that these rates are only increasing? Why does the Las Virgenes Unified School District, a "PUBLIC" school district, go out of its way to hire former NFL players to coach the football teams, so they can attract the best football players from around the county, all so they can win; but they do not go out of their way to ensure that we have more than enough mental health counselors, on-site but available before, during, and after school?  Why do sports come before mental health at LVUSD? What in the world are the Superintendent & the Governing School Board Members doing?  Asking for a community that desperately wants the best for "our" children! Maybe if Dan Stepenosky didn’t hire (5) Deans for about an extra million dollars per year, the district could afford to have a team of crisis counselors for the suffering students. It took the Round Meadow Elementary mental health counselor ten days to get back to a grandparent with concerns over her granddaughter's mental health.   The student transferred to a new district, and then the counselor returned the family’s call.   Too little, too late!  Shame on Las Virgenes Unified School District and their inadequate mental health staff. https://www.theacorn.com/articles/unhappy-school-experience/?fbclid=IwAR2Ty1wYfem3_xbyx_7t1wX098KIJo77aoe2JSqxpqJBXgM9b7q-H7_XPuw
According to the California Department of Education laws, the majority of approved Ethnic Studies Model Curriculum for the Las Virgenes Unified School District should be Asian authors, not Black authors. Why did the Las Virgenes Unified School District curriculum council approve 70% black authors for the Ethnic Studies Model Curriculum when there are clear guidelines on how to appropriate the books based on the demographics of the District? Lesli Stein for re-election LVUSD School Board 2022 and Linda Menges are assigned to the LVUSD Curriculum Council, and they did not speak up about this.  Why not? "The Ethnic Studies Model Curriculum must reflect the requirements in the authorizing statute as well as other legal requirements for the curriculum in California.
