Some highlights from our conversation
- Our brains transition at several stages of our lives, including the different hormones and neuro-transmitters that happen when a couple is getting ready for a baby to arrive. This happens to both men and women.
- So often the mom is the one that notices the child is atypical, even though others may tell her she’s crazy. This is they “mommy gut” factor.
- If you are worried about your child, call your primary care physician for an extended appointment.
- When a parent discovers their child is atypical, or simply if their dreams for their child get shattered, they will go through the grief stages of Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, and Acceptance. Denial for example, can take minutes or years to go through, and so in her book she has techniques to move from one stage to the next.
- With an atypical child, the family “rhythm” is thrown off, and that affects the family life significantly.
- Resentment between husband and wife can occur due to the extra time the child needs from one or the other.
- She will take requests on topics to write about on her blog at http://positivelyatypical.com/
Best Marriage Advice when raising an atypical child:
- Once a week date night. Must find that time together.
- Must maintain a vibrant sexual relationship.
- Be aware of each other’s needs and allow each other to spend the time taking care of themselves.
