Pl: Mateusz leżał w łóżku i nasłuchiwał.
En: Mateusz lay in bed and listened intently.

Pl: Była noc, a reszta dzieci w sierocińcu już dawno spała.
En: It was night, and the rest of the children in the orphanage had long been asleep.

Pl: Ale nie Mateusz.
En: But not Mateusz.

Pl: Jego uszy wychwytywały cichą melodię, która niosła się przez korytarze starego domu.
En: His ears picked up a quiet melody that carried through the corridors of the old house.

Pl: Melodia była tajemnicza i piękna, a jednocześnie jakby znajoma.
En: The melody was mysterious and beautiful, yet somehow familiar.

Pl: Skąd się brała?
En: Where did it come from?

Pl: Co kryło się na strychu, skąd dochodziła?
En: What was hidden in the attic, where it was coming from?

Pl: Mateusz zajmował pokój na poddaszu.
En: Mateusz occupied a room in the attic.

Pl: Stąd łatwo było wdrapać się wyżej, tam gdzie była zabroniona strefa.
En: From there, it was easy to climb higher, to the forbidden zone.

Pl: Każdej nocy marzył, by odkryć źródło tej muzyki.
En: Every night, he dreamed of discovering the source of the music.

Pl: Ale, jak zawsze, strach i wątpliwości przeważały.
En: But, as always, fear and doubt prevailed.

Pl: Co, jeśli to tylko wiatr?
En: What if it was just the wind?

Pl: A może to kolejna halucynacja?
En: Or maybe another hallucination?

Pl: Następnego dnia w czasie przerwy na podwórzu podszedł do niego Jacek.
En: The next day during recess in the yard, Jacek approached him.

Pl: "Znowu nie spałeś?
En: "Didn't sleep again?"

Pl: ", pytał, lecz Mateusz tylko wzruszał ramionami.
En: he asked, but Mateusz just shrugged his shoulders.

Pl: Późnym popołudniem w rogu jadalni znalazł Ewa, której postanowił zwierzyć się ze swoich planów.
En: Later in the afternoon, he found Ewa in the corner of the dining room and decided to confide in her about his plans.

Pl: Ewa, o dwa lata starsza, była sceptyczna.
En: Ewa, two years older, was skeptical.

Pl: "Muzyka na strychu?
En: "Music in the attic?

Pl: Ty to masz wyobraźnię!
En: You've got quite the imagination!"

Pl: ", śmiała się.
En: she laughed.

Pl: Ale w głębi duszy ciekawość zwyciężyła.
En: But deep down, curiosity won out.

Pl: "Dobra, pomogę ci.
En: "Okay, I'll help you.

Pl: Ale musimy być cicho jak myszy!"
En: But we must be as quiet as mice!"

Pl: — postanowiła.
En: she decided.

Pl: Kiedy zapadł zmrok, Mateusz i Ewa czekali.
En: As darkness fell, Mateusz and Ewa waited.

Pl: Gdy dom pogrążył się w ciszy, ruszyli na palcach w stronę schodów prowadzących na strych.
En: When the house was engulfed in silence, they tiptoed towards the stairs leading to the attic.

Pl: Deski skrzypiały pod ich stopami, ale ich determinacja była większa niż strach.
En: The floorboards creaked under their feet, but their determination was stronger than their fear.
