Most consultants I speak with tell me they don't have a strategic plan for their consulting business.
The same consultants complain of:
- Dependency on one BIG client taking 50-60% of their annual revenue
- Unpredictable referrals and lead generation
- Being forced to say "Yes" to client demands because there are no other prospects to sell to
- Being sick of seeing other consulting firms do so well while yours ambles along
If you're experiencing any of these but aren't actively doing anything to fix them, then one thing's for sure: they will get worse.
Ignoring symptoms don't make them go away.
This is where pragmatic strategic planning comes in. A strategic plan is just a fancy phrase for charting out what you wish to focus on for the next few months. The goal is to increase your likelihood of success, which could mean more sales, higher gross margins and/or more qualified team members to drive your business forward.
But before you plan, you need the right ingredients to create a plan that works. In consulting, there are a few unique ingredients that you can't ignore if you want the above results.
