Zohar Toldot

#149

Rabbi Chezkiah said: But we see that “מִשְׁמַנֵּי הָאָרֶץ”, “from the fatness of the earth” and “מִטַּל הַשָּׁמַיִם”, “from the dew of the heavens” (Genesis 27:28 ) are the blessings that Esau later took, as you say: “הִנֵּה מִשְׁמַנֵּי הָאָרֶץ יִהְיֶה מוֹשָׁבֶךָ וּמִטַּל הַשָּׁמַיִם מֵעָל”, “Behold, of the fatness of the earth shall be your dwelling, and of the dew of the heavens from above” (Genesis 27:39 ). So how can you say that they come to counter the curses of the Tree of Knowledge after repentance in the days of the Mashiach?

Notes:

Rabbi Chezkiah questions how מִשְׁמַנֵּי הָאָרֶץ and מִטַּל הַשָּׁמַיִם can be final rectification blessings if Esau later received them (הִנֵּה מִשְׁמַנֵּי הָאָרֶץ, Genesis 27:39 ). This challenges the measure-for-measure rectification at Final Tikkun.

#150

Rabbi Shimon said: This is not like that. Esau is not like Jacob, and this blessing is not like that one, and the levels are greatly different. In Jacob it is written: “וְיִתֵּן לְךָ הָאֱלֹהִים”, “And God will give you” (Genesis 27:28 ), but in Esau’s blessing it is written: “יִהְיֶה מוֹשָׁבֶךָ”, “Shall be your dwelling” (Genesis 27:39 ), and God is not mentioned in the blessing, for there was no holiness in it. In Jacob it is written “מִטַּל הַשָּׁמַיִם וּמִשְׁמַנֵּי הָאָרֶץ”, “from the dew of the heavens and from the fatness of the earth” (Genesis 27:28 ), but in Esau it is written “מִשְׁמַנֵּי הָאָרֶץ וּמִטַּל הַשָּׁמַיִם”, “of the fatness of the earth and of the dew of the heavens” (Genesis 27:39 ), the earth preceding the heavens, for this is not similar to that one.

Notes:

Rabbi Shimon distinguishes Jacob’s divine blessing (וְיִתֵּן לְךָ הָאֱלֹהִים, heavens first) from Esau’s earthly one (יִהְיֶה מוֹשָׁבֶךָ, earth first, no mention of God), showing no holiness in Esau’s portion. Jacob’s blessing counters the Tree of Knowledge curses, while Esau’s is material and inferior.

#151

The levels move away from one another significantly and greatly. For in Jacob’s it is written: “וְיִתֵּן לְךָ הָאֱלֹהִים מִטַּל הַשָּׁמַיִם”, “And God will give you from the dew of the heavens” (Genesis 27:28 ). This is the upper dew (טַּל הָעֶלְיוֹן), which is the abundance drawn from Atik Yomin (עתיק יומין), who is called the dew of the heavens, that is, the dew of the heavens above. The dew that is drawn in the level called heavens, which is Zeir Anpin, and from there it flows to the holy apple field (חקל תפוחין קדישין), which is Malchut. And then it is said about her: וּמִשְׁמַנֵּי הָאָרֶץ—” and from the fatness of the earth” (Genesis 27:28 ). The earth, this is the land of life above, that is, Malchut, when she clothes Binah, which is called Living God (אלהים חיים). And therefore Malchut is then called the land of life (אֶרֶץ הַחַיִּים). And Jacob inherited the blessing in the earth above, which is Malchut, and in the heavens above, which is Zeir Anpin. And Esau’s blessing was in the earth here below and in the heavens here below, that is, in this world. Jacob was blessed above, that is, in the heavens and earth of Atzilut, and Esau below, that is, in the heavens and earth of this world.

Notes:

This Zohar explains the distinction between Jacob’s and Esau’s blessings. Jacob receives upper dew from Atik Yomin through Zeir Anpin and fatness from Malchut clothed in Binah (land of life), both in Atzilut. Esau’s blessing is earthly, in this world. This emphasizes Jacob’s spiritual inheritance versus Esau’s material one.
